judges 4 -year-old class
The sixth meeting of theClinforth Dairy
Calf Club was held on August 4 at Pamp
Carter's. Members went to the barn to judge
a difficult class of four -year-olds. Everyone
gave their reasons. Bob Vodden was the of-
ficial judge.
Members then sat outside to do their
lesson. Lisa read the minutes of the last
meeting. The lesson was called "FIT - NOT
FAT". Members learned about seven dif-
ferent health disorders.
The following people will represent the
club at the Reach For The Top Game in Clin-
ton; Pam Carter, Dave Jones, Lisa Rodges,
John Van Den Elzen and Erin Lobb. We
wish them lots of luck.
It was a hot night, so after themeeting
everyone enjoyed a swim in the Carter pool.
The next meeting will be the written ex-
am. No date has been given to this point.

Ontario farm -start program is nearly full
By Jack Riddell
The Ontario Farm -Start program offer-
ing assistance to new farmers is nearing
full enrolment.
The program was introduced in January
to help 2,300 new farmers get into business
over the next five years. Interest in the
program has surpassed our expectations.
Some 3,100 applications have been receiv-
ed. The program will continue to accept
applications until it reaches the 3,300 mark.
and then will take another 500 applications
on a waiting list. Should any people in the
pre -enrolment group drop out, those on the
waiting list will be considered in the order
their applications were received by the
ministry.
The $90 million program offers two op-
tions for new farmers - to apply for im-
mediate enrolment and begin receiving
benefits or to pre -register for the program
for up to three years in advance of receiv-
ing benefits to allow time to meet all of the
criteria.
The response to this program shows
there is optimism about the future of
agriculture, particularly from our young
people choosing a career in agriculture.
I've been impressed with the high calibre
of those being accepted into the program.
The Ontario Farm -Start program pro-
vides a total of $38,000 in grants over seven
years with an initial grant of $11,000 and
declining grants in the following years.
Employment -Disadvantaged
Youth Get
Financial help
Funding of more than $100,000 for the
WoodGreen Employment Services Centre
in Toronto has been announced by Skills
Development Minister Alvin Curling.
As one of the many community-based
employment counselling centres operating
across the province, the WoodGreen cen-
tre offers job search skills, training and
employment counselling to employment -
disadvantaged youth.
In 1987, over 28,000 young people used
the services of youth employment
counselling centres across the province.
The centres raise money from the com-
munity and the monies raised are then
matched by funds from the Ministry of
Skills Development.
"This Youth Employment Counselling
Centre plays an important role in helping
young people in the area find their way in-
to the workforce and become contributing
members of society," Mr. Curling said.
"Local initiative and knowledge are
vital to the success of projects that im-
prove job skills and work opportunities for
our young people," Mr. Curling added,
congratulating the community on its
support.
Grants To The Riding
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs have
recently announced PRIDE grants to two
towns in Huron. The town of Goderich will
receive $200,000 and the village of Blyth,
$150,000.
The Claybird Gun Club in Exeter has
received a Wintario Detelopment Grant in
the amount of $3,070 to enable them to pur-
chase equipment for trap shooting.
The town of Goderich is receiving a
$13,109 grant from the Ministry of Energy
under the Municipal Oil Conversion
Energy Conservation Program, for an oil
conversion project in the community
centre.
The Ministry of Health have recently
awarded up to $75,000 in annual funding to
the Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital Ambulance Service to assist in
expanding staffing. In addition, by early
fall, a third ambulance will be fully staffed
at the station for five days a week, eight
hours per day. Ambulance drive/atten-
dants are on standby at other times, pro-
viding services 24 hours per day, seven
days a week.

ed by the. Ministry of Housing for one unit
