Golf summer sport for Juniors
Preparations are underway for our Junior
Invitational tournament that takes place
August 16. By the time this goes to press the
tournament will be over and winners
declared for another year.
This year over 60 young golfers ranging in
age from 10 to 18 years will be taking part.
Each golfer must play 18 holes and prizes
are presented to winners in three age groups
with every participant receiving a prize.
Gord Sallows from Seaforth donated our
Junior Trophy over 15 years ago and there is
a long list of names engraved on it. Many
former winners have gone on to make golf
their career; names such as Steve Bennett
(head pro at Huron Oaks), Dave Bedour
(assistant pro at Huron Oaks), Matt Cole,
(pro at Beachgrove), and Mark Kappes.
Many other former winners continue to
dominate amateur competitions for exam-
ple - Brennan Little and Mike Weir, both
champion competitors at provincial level.
Our junior golfers enjoy plenty of golf all
summer long with Tuesday mornings set
aside for their special events. Without a
doubt the local invitational is what our
juniors look forward to each summer. Many
of our own juniors do well here and at other
competitions in the area, including club
events and the Optimist events. It truly is
gratifying to see an 85 lb. 10 -year-old shoot a
dynamite score in competition. They may
not hit it far, but they're right down the mid-
dle and after playing almost every day all
summer, their chipping and putting is great.
The youngsters get all dressed up for their
big day and are well mannered as well as
skilled at the game. Golf teaches them good
sportsmanship, self discipline, fairness, and
honesty. Golf for juniors is a great way to
spend the summer and I congratulate all our
young golfers who took part in the tourna-
ment. Everyone of you is a winner!
