Merchants ousted from OBA playdowns after two games
The Seaforth Merchants Senior Mens
hardball team was unable to continue its
winning streak into the OBA playdowns. The
Merchants lost a two -out -of -three series
against Walkerton on Saturday, and the
chance to advance to the provincial tourna-
ment. Earlier in the week the Merchants
beat Exeter 13-11 in regular season action.
"The way we played in Exeter last Tues-
day night, it looked as though nothing would
stop us going into OBA playoff action
against Walkerton," said Coach Marc
Robinet.
"But the tables turned upside down in a
hurry."
Coach Robinet noted Saturday's losses
came as a shock. The team had just won six
of its last seven games, and appeared to
have everything - good pitching, good
defense, and good hitting (the team was
scoring eight to 10 runs a game)- going for
it.
"What happened? Well, the runs didn't
get scored, our defense wasn't there, we
made two or three costly errors in each
game and our pitching wasn't as sharp as it
has been. Result? Walkerton wins the two
out of three series and moves on in its quest
for the All Ontario title," he said.
WALKERTON 21-SEAFORTH 6
Game one was scoreless through the first
two innings, but that tie was broken in the
third when Walkerton scored twice to take
the lead. Walkerton added a further run in
the fourth and two in the fifth to give
themselves a 5-0 lead.
Seaforth railed in the bottom of the fifth
and scored four times to narrow the gap to
5-4, but Walkerton broke the game wide
open in the sixth and scored 10 runs to take a
15-4 lead from which Seaforth never
recovered.
Walkerton added six more runs in the
seventh, while Seaforth countered with two
in their half of the inning, to make the final
score 21-6.
Seaforth scored its six runs on 10 hits.
Players walked twice, ,struck out eight
times and made three errors. Eight men
were left on base.

WALKERTON 7-SEAFORTH 6
Game two was a better one as far as
Seaforth was concerned - but not good
enough. A last inning rally failed to give the
Merchants the runs they needed to force this
series into a third game.
The game started on a positive note with
Seaforth taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
Walkerton countered with a rim in the
fourth, but fell behind again when Seaforth
scored another run in the bottom of the
inning.
Walkerton scored three more runs in the
fifth to take a 42 lead, then added three
more in the sixth to make the score 7-2.
At their last at bats, Seaforth scored four
times, but finished the game one run short of
a tie.
In total Seaforth scored its six runs on
seven hits. Players walked four times,
struck out five times, made five errors and
left 11 men on base.

calibre soccer. Pat Cook scored the lone St.
Columban goal.

Winthrop tournament good to the last plop
The second annual Winthrop Co-ed
Slowpitch Tournament started out with a
"plop" and ended up with a "plop" during
the continued heat wave of '88.
The first "plop" was the coin being flipped
to start the first game of this prestigious
tournament. All 16 teams, a class unto
themselves, were hungry to claim the
gorgeous 'silver and ball trophy' held over
the year by the G.M.s - "A" champs of 1987.
As in all baseball tournaments there were
many mentionable and unmentionable
plays - rumors of alleged trips at first base,
body -checking! on base lines and as usual
the highly over -paid umpires had to take the
usual flak over poor calls. (Actually, the
umpires, who donated their time, did an ex-
cellent job).
The cruncher of games came Sunday
afternoon when only four teams were left to
battle the "A" and "B" championship out.
The "B" championship was played first
with "The Deadringers" battling it out with
"The Honeycomb Kids".
A tough first cou-
ple of innings, complete with errors all ball
players have nightmares about, put the
"Honeycomb Kids" deep in the hole. The
"Deadringers" capitalized and held on to
take the "B" championship with a 14-1
score. The "A" championship turned out to
be an exact duplicate of the 1987 final. Again
it was the "D.A.M.s" led by Don McClure,
facing the defending champs "G.M.s"
coached by Glen McClure with a non-
chalance that Billy Martin would envy.
The turf was hard, the wind strong, the
pitching excellent and when the list ball
was pitched the "G.M.s" again claimed the
"A" trophy with a slim 1-0 win. Congratula-
tions to all teams for a fun -filled, sun -filled
weekend of mush -ball.
And so, it came to the final plop deposited
by Annie -the -cow to declare the final win-
ners in the Messy Bingo contest. The lucky
people who were dumped on were Al
Rose(winning $250), Lyn Godkin ($150),
Jason and Stephanie MacDonald ($100) and
Brett Finlayson won the special draw for a
paint and wallpaper certificate. All money
from the tournament goes to Winthrop
Minor Ball. A great community effort for
the kids!
