The bin, purchased from a company near Barrie and delivered last Monday, July 25th, is approximately nine feet high and can hold approximately seven tonnes of newspaper, two tonnes of tin and one tonne of elaseware • The Hibbert residents are asked to sort their garbage for this bin, although Hibbert Reeve Roy Swart assured that that step wasn't mandatory. The bin cost the township approximately $9,000, although the township is seeking grant money from both the Ministry of the Environment and OMMRI (Ontario Multi Material Recycling Incorporated). Both grants, if they come through, will each pay one-third of the total bin cost (a total of two- thirds, or an estimated $6,000). • The recycling bin will save the township further costs in the future, Swart said, in- dicating than it will prolong the lifespan of the current landfill site. The bin will be in operation, with an atten- dant present to help sort the material, duq- ing regular landfill site hours. HIBBERT RECYCLING BIN - The Township of Hibbert will use their new $9,000 recycling bin for the first time this Saturday, August 6th, located at the township's landfill site. The bin, which can store seven tonnes of newspapers, two tonnes of tin and onui tonne of glassware, is seen above with Hibbert Reeve Roy Swart (right) and Ken Pullman, the landfill site custodian. St. James church sees major renovations St. James Roman Catholic Church in Seaforth is undergoing .complete exterior renovations. Much of the work is •being done to the tower, and it is being done by Ivan Nielsen Masonry of Seaforth. Brickwork is to be repaired and replaced; all woodcraft will be scraped, repaired, primed and painted; and eavestroughs will be repaired or replaced. All of this work will be done to match the existing designs, but the cross on the rooftop will be replaced. The current cross is made of wood, and it has become the home for a lot of the area birds. It will be replaced by a cross of the same dimensions, but made of aluminum. The lower church will also be renovated. Repointing will be done where needed, bricks will be replaced where needed, and windowsills will be repaired or replaced. All the trim on the church and the rectory will be painted by Nielsen Brothers Painting of Seaforth. The estimated cost for the work is $25,000. The work by Mr. Nielsen will cost roughly $14,000. The rental of scaffold will cost $1,800 for four weeks, an additional $450 per week, plus $5,950 to erect and dismantle the scaf- fold. And painting of the church and rectory should make up the remaining costs. The church tower, which is about 90 feet tall, was for many years the tallest struc- ture in Seaforth. The Presbyterian Church was built in 1867, but the tower was not con- structed until 1904. St. James Church was constructed in 1869, and was established as a parish in 1880. Renovations to the building were done in 1933 and the last major renovations were done in 1951 and 1952, but this is the first time the tower has been repointed. Isabelle Campbell had this to say about the church in "The Story of Seaforth": "It was in 1869 the spacious and dignified white brick St. James' Roman Catholic Church was built on Victoria Street under Father Murphy's supervision, on a lot bought by him from Dr.T.T. Coleman. The dedication service was conducted by Rt. Rev. Bishop Walsh on July 17, 1870. From 1870 till 1880 the parish was attend- ed by Rev. Dean Murphy, or one of his many valued assistants, till the first resident priest was appointed on January 29, 1880. He was Rev. Father O'Shea. Until a pastor's residence was secured, Father O'Shea boarded in a local hotel. In July 1880, it was planned to build a residence on a lot at the rear of the church. However, in September of that same year, the large frame home of Thomas Coventry was pur- chased. The price paid was $2,600. This was - the home of the priests till the present white brick was built by 1900, during the pastorate of Father McCabe. The first rectory is now the home of Mrs. Scott Habkirk." The work began with the scaffolding being erected on July 13 and will likely be com- pleted by the middle of August. 0 (l, ST. JAMES CHURCH in Seaforth is undergoing a complete renovation of the outside of its tower. Bricks are being replaced and brickwork repaired and a new cross has been erected. Afterward the main building and the rectory will be painted. The work is estimated to cost about $25,000 once completed, and should be finished by Mid August.
