While Seaforth doesn't yet have water
restrictions, the Public Utilities Comnlls-
aion has appealed to Seaforth homeowners
to voluntarily cut back on water consump-
tion. The main large usage of water the
PUC would like to see eliminated is lawn
and garden watering. Paul Vander Molen
of Lawmnaster has some ideas about how
to bringtyour yard through the drought
with minimal watering.
When a lawn lacks water it obviously
turns brown, but this is not because the
lawn is dying. The Lawn is what Mr.
Vander. Molen calls stressed, and it goes
into dormancy. The lawn will come back
and be green again, and all that is needed
ip one inch of rain per week and cool nights
for three weeks. Mr. Vander Molen says
lawns which are dormant during the sum-
mer could be green again by this fall.
There are also limited times when a per-
son should water their lawn. Watering in
.the heat of the day puts stress on a lawn,
and watering at night makes lawns suscep-
tible to a fungus known as fusarium blight.
This fungus spreads throughout a lawn and
creates brown spots. Watering agressive-
ly in the early evening is the way to beat
this fungus once it attacks your lawn.
But the best time to water is in the early
morning -before 10 a.m.
More important than lawns during a
drought are trees and shrubs according to
Mr. Vander Molen. He says forget about
lawns and concentrate on these, because
trees and shrubs also become stressed and
need water. They too eventually go into
dormancy during a drought, but they have

a harder time bouncing back from it than
do lawns.
Leaves on a tree should be flat, and if
they are starting to curl it means the tree
is under stress and needs water. Another
sign of stress is if the tree's bark is not
firmly attached to the trunk.
Trees should not be watered at the trunk,
but around the dripline -a few feet from the
trunk depending on the size of the tree. A
few small holes should be dug along the
dripline and the water fed directly into
them.
"Drought is another stress for a tree, but
if it's a healthy tree it'll come through,"
says Mr. Vander Molen.
A lot of shrubs are turning brown, but
the drought may not be the reason. Spider
mites could also be the cause. To• beat
spider mites you should cut out all the
brown areas of the shrub and spray it with
insecticide. Spraying should not be done
when it is very hot.
Stressed shrubs should, be kept wet and
the ground beneath them watered. They
should also be pruned with cuts being
made horizontally. This lets light get to the
inside of the plant, so it doesn't die inside.
There is also a new type of grass being
developed which is drought resistant. Turf
type perennial rye grass can be added to
lawns, and it is not discernably different
from kentucky blue but it needs less water
and takes longer before it goes into
dormancy.
So, Mr. Vander Molen says let your lawn
go brown -it can survive in dormancy even
if the drought lasts all summer- and water
the trees and shrubs which need help.
