90 relatives attend Dublin mass

Around 90 relatives attended a mass on
Saturday at St. Patrick's Church, Dublin, to
celebrate 50 years of marriage with Mr. and
Mrs. Fergus Stapleton of Mill St., Dublin.
Lori Lynn Stapleton, Dublin, and Diane
Miller (Stapleton), Zurich, sang and accom-
panied themselves on the guitar before
mass.
Father John Stapleton offered mass.
Kathleen Potje (niece), Kitchener, sang
Ave Maria during mass.
They all then went to the Victorian Inn in
Stratford where they enjoyed a dinner. The
master of ceremonies was Bob Stapleton.
Members of the family entertained with
musical numbers and many jovial remarks
and comments from throughout Mary and
Ferg's life were most enjoyed by all.
A dance concluded the reunion and
celebration of the two families, Stapleton
and Molyneaux.
Miss Barbara Eckert from Mississauga
was home for a few days last week with her
parents Joe and Olga Eckert. Also at the
same home on Sunday were Judy and Dun-
can Emm and girls from Stratford.
Orval Davidson (Eileen's brother), from
Toronto, is home for a few days to spend
some time with his mother, Ada Davidson,
of the Ritz Villa in Mitchell after she suf-
fered a few cracked ribs sustained from a
fall last week at her home.
Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Costello (Murray)
from Kingston visited relatives in the com-
munity on the weekend.
A number of area people attended the Old
Tyme Fiddle and Step Dancing contest in
Fergus on the weekend and saw Donny
Stacey win first place in the boys stepping
class and also the Stratford group Judy
Waymouth, teacher, of which the Stacey
children are part of come in first in their
class as well.

Swingers win Walton ladies slopitch tournament

The Walton Ladies Slo Pitch Tourna-
ment was held on Friday night and Satur-
day. Hot humid weather was endured, not
enjoyed by all. Eight teams participated in
the tournament.
Three games were played Friday night
with the Goderich Night Owls defeating
Brodhagen Bombers 16-11, the Goderich Old
Timers defeating the Wellesley Emeralds
13-6 and the Atwood Mama's defeating
Doug's Sports, Goderich by another close
score of 13-9.
In the final game of first round action
played Saturday morning, the Seaforth Sw-
ingers defeated the Monkton Wildcats in ex-
tra innings 19-18. In second round action, the
' Wellesley Emeralds defeated Brodhagen
Bombers 9-8, in the second extra inning
game of the day, to advance to the B Final.
In the third extra inning game of the day,
the Goderich Night Owls defeated the rival
Goderich Old Timers by a score of 9-8 to ad-
vance to the A Final.
The next semi-final game saw Monktor
Wildcats mercy, Doug's Sports of Godericl
team to advance to the B Final by a score 01
18-6. In the last semi final game, the
Seaforth Swingers defeated the Atwooc
Mama's by a close score of 16-13.
The B Final game was played at 4:30 mat-
ching the Monkton Wildcats against the
Wellesley Emeralds. After 5 innings the
lead had changed hands each inning until
the sixth inning when Monkton scored four
runs to go ahead and then wrapped up the
game with 11 runs in the seventh inning for a
decisive win of 22-9 over Wellesley.
The A Final was an equally exciting game
as the lead changed every inning. After
seven complete innings, was tied 15-15,
Seaforth Swingers scored one run in the top
of the eighth and the Goderich Night Owls
came back to score one run in the bottom of
the eighth. The top of the ninth saw
Goderich score two more runs and manage
to hold Goderich to no runs in the bottom of
the ninth. Seaforth Swingers defeated the
Goderich Night Owls by a score of 18-16 in a
very close and exciting game.
Many good ball games were enjoyed by
all, although spectators were few because of
the heat. The Walton Ladies Slo Pitch team
appreciates all those who did attend and
especially the teams and umpires who en-
dured the heat to make another successful

SPORTS CLUB
The Walton Area Sports Club sold 50/50
tickets at the weekend tournament and the
winner of the draw was Jean Workman of
Brussels.
W.I. NOTES
It's an open meeting on July 20 for the
Walton Women's Institute. Convenor for In-
ternational Affairs, Viola Kirkley will have
Jean Bewley give a slide commentary of
their recent trip to China. Roll Call- A cur-
rent event from, a foreign country.
PEOPLE ON THE GO
Howard and Audrey Hackwell spent a few
days holidaying at Lion's Head. Patricia
Hackwell was home for the weekend and at-
tended the Ryan -Humphries wedding.
Allan and Alice Searle have returned
home from a motor trip to the East Coast.
Ken and Leona McDonald motored to the
West Coast where they visited with relatives
enroute. Michael and Kendra, grand-
children from Alberta returned home with

Congratulations are extended to Carolyn
O'Reilly and Bob Houben who were united in
marriage on Saturday, July 9 at St. Colum -
ban Catholic Church with Father Joe Hardy
officiating.
Parents of the bride and groom are Jack
and Margaret O'Reilly and Jdhn and
Melanie Houben.
Dinner and wedding reception were held
at the Mitchell and District Community Cen-
tre. Guests attending came from Holland,
Sarnia, Toronto, London, Windsor, Kit-
chener, Stratford, Kinkora, Komoka, Brant-
ford, Guelph, Galt, Mitchell, Seaforth and
surrounding area.
BRIDAL SHOWER
A miscellaneous bridal shower was held
on Sunday afternoon at the home of Marie
and Francis Hicknell for Mary Ellen Van
Broekhoven.
Wilma Van Broekhoven of Port Stanley,
mother of the bride-to-be, and relatives and
neighbors of the Hicknells attended the
shower hosted by Teresa Van Raay and
Margaret Hicknell, sisters of the groom -to -
be Joe Hicknell:
Mary Ellen's marriage to Joe Hicknell
will take place on August 6, 1988 in Port
Stanley.

her marriage to Thomas Wayne Dickens.
The wedding took place on Saturday, July 9
in the Christian Reformed Church of
Exeter.
On Saturday, July 9 Thea and Uwe Wisch
celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
Many friends and neighbors were there to
offer congratulations along with about 25
relatives and friends who had arrived from
Germany within the past week to help
celebrate this happy occasion.

University Hospital, London. Mass of the
Christian burial was held on Tuesday, July 5
at St. Columban Catholic Church with Fr.
T.J. Melady officiating, assisted by Fr. Joe

day evening supper guests with Isabelle

Barry and Olene MacLeod of Kitchener
spent the weekend at their home in the
village.
Gerald and Berva Watson and Mary Ber-
nard and Christopher spent the weekend in
Toronto where they attended the christening
on Sunday of the daughter of Sal and Ann
Curreri of Richmond Hill. They attended a
baby shower on Saturday.
SPORTS CLUB MEET
The Walton Area Sports Club held their
monthly meeting July 5. Upcoming tour-
naments were discussed. The Bantam tour-
nament
ournament is scheduled for August 5, 6, and 7
and the Squirts August 12-13. Plans for the
barbecue for August 19 to be discussed at
the next meeting August 2 at 8 p.m. at the
library. The club will be selling 50/50 draw
tickets at each of the tournaments.
