REV. JOHN MCCONNELL, M.M.
The sudden death of Rev. John McCon-
nell, M.M. occurred in Los Altos, California
on June 12. He was 79.
Father McConnell, who lived retired in
Los Altos, had been in poor health for some
time.
Born in Cromarty he was a son of the late
Dave McConnell and Rose Carpenter. On
graduation from area schools he attended
the University of Western Ontario, London.
Following graduation he entered St. Peter's
seminary in London. For many years he
served with Maryknoll Missions at various
locations in Canada and the United States.
Father McConnell ws predeceased by two
brothers, Joseph -McConnell and Patrick D.
McConnell, formerly of Seaforth; and by
two sisters, Mary and Rose.
MARTHA DRAGER
Martha Drager of Seaforth, died Sunday,
July 3, 1988 at University Hospital, London.
She was 78.
Born in Logan Township on September 29,
1909, she was a daughter of the late Henry
and Amelia Leonhardt. She married George
Ernest Drager in 1929.
Mrs. Drager is survived by five sons,
Wilfred and wife Jean, Ronald and wife
Dorothy, all of Seaforth, Kenneth and wife
Margaret of London, Raymond and wife
Shirley of Denfield and Harvey and wife
Maizie of Plattsville; and six daughters,
Dorothy Baker and husband Meada of Win-
throp, Pearl Johnston and husband Bruce of
Seaforth, Rita Hatcher and husband George
of Petawawa, Erma Costello of Seaforth,
Betty Lou Price and husband Albert of
Calgary, Alberta, and Jacqueline Clithero
and husband Dave of Victoria, British
Columbia.
Also surviving are 38 grandchildren and
38 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Drager was predeceased by one son
Lloyd in 1941 and two brothers, Norman and
Herman.
Friends were received at the Whitney-
Ribey funeral home, Seaforth and a funeral
service will be held today (Wednesday) with
the Reverend Bill Barber officiating. Burial
will be in St. Peter's Lutheran Church
Cemetery, Brodhagen.
Pallbearers were Murray Drager, Dale
Drager, Ed Baker, Bob Costello, Don
Drager and Ron Johnston.
Flower bearers were Peggy Dale, Gloria
Johnston, Sheila Feeney and Sharon
Drager.
WILLA FERN TAYLOR
Willa Taylor of Clinton, and formerly of
Goderich Township died in Clinton Public
Hospital on July 1. She was 66.
Born on August 22, 1921 in Goderich
Township, she was the daughter of Oliver
John and Bertha Maud (Bean) Jervis.
She was married at the Jervis farm in
Goderich Township on December 7,1940 to
Bob Taylor. After their marriage the
Taylors farmed in Goderich Township un-
til 1973 when they moved to Clinton.
Mrs. Taylor was a member of the On-
tario Street United Church, the Ontario
Street UCW, and the Huronic Rebekah
Lodge Clinton No. 306. She was also an
honorary member of the Varna UCW.
She is survived by her husband, a
daughter Carol and her husband Lloyd
Moore of Exeter, and two sons, Barry and
his wife Pat, and Don and his wife Lor-
raine, both of RR 3 Clinton.
She is also survived by one brother,
Russel Jervis of Clinton. Also surviving
are six grandchildren; Tim and Cindy
Moore, and Jacqui, Steven, Greg and Kim
Taylor.
Mrs. Taylor was predeceased by one
sister, Cora (Mrs. Arthur Bishop).
A funeral service was held at the Ball
and Falconer Funeral Home on July 3 with
Rev. Stan MacDonald, a personal friend of
the family, presiding. A memorial service
was also held by the Huronic Rebekah
Lodge No. 306 on July 2.
Mrs. Taylor's six grandchildren were
the flower bearers, and the pallbearers
were Murray Forbes, Keith Caswell,
David Jervis, Arthur Makkreel, Howard
Payne and Murray Payne.
Interment in Bayfield Cemetery.
PEARL MANN
Pearl Mann of Listowel, died Thursday,
June 23, 1988 in Listowel Memorial Hospital.
She was 84.
Born September 5, 1903 she was the
daughter of the late Robert Bowes and the
former Eliza Jane Hunter of the Trowbridge
area. On June 18, 1930 she married Archie
Mann and the couple resided on the Mann
homestead, Lot 35, Con. 16, Grey Township.
They farmed until 1968 when their son Bill
purchased the farm. The Manns continued
to live near Moncrieff until April 1978 when
they moved to Listowel. Mrs. Man was a
member of Calvary United Church,
Listowel.
Besides her husband Mrs. Mann is surviv-
ed by one daughter Marion and her husband
Harold Roberts of Listowel; one son Robert
Mann and his wife Pat of Clinton; and one
daughter-in-law Mary Beth Mann of RR 1
Monkton.
Also surviving are five granddaughters:
Lorrie (Mrs. Neil Baker) of Clinton,
Melanie Mann of Quebec City, Shelley Mann
of Goderich and Tracy and Kendra Mann of
RR 1 Monkton; two great-grandchildren,
Kennedy and Jordon Baker of Clinton; and
one sister Velma Smith of Listowel.
Mrs. Mann was predeceased by her
parents; step -mother Margaret Hunter;
and one son William A. Mann.
A funeral service was held June 25 at the
Peebles Funeral Home, Atwood and inter-
ment followed at the Elma Center
Cemetery, Atwood.
The organist was a niece, Mrs. Harold
Elliott of RR 6 Goderich. A special musical
number during the service was provided by
Fred Hill, Listowel, Colin McIntosh;
Molesworth, Ruth Vines, RR 1 Listbwel and
Grace Bender, Gowanstown, friends of the
Mann family.
Pallbearers were Charlie Harrison,
Listowel, Bob Harrison, Jim Mann, Bryce
Mann and Dale Smith, all of Moncrieff and
Ken Smith, Atwood.
Flower bearers were Mrs. Mann's
grandchildren.
As expressions of sympathy donations
were accepted to the Lou Gehrig's Disease
Research, Heart and Stroke Foundation and
Calvary United Church Memorial Fund,
Listowel.
MARY MELADY
Mary Melady of Hibbert Township, died
Saturday, July 2, 1988 at University
Hospital, London. She was 83.
Born at Clinton on February 13, 1905, she
was a daughter of the late Owen Flynn and
the former Mary Evans. She and her hus-
band Maurice Melady, now deceased, had
farmed in Hibbert Township.
She was a member of St. Columban
Roman Catholic Church and the CWL of the
church.
Mrs. Melady is survived by two sons, John
of Brighton and Theo of RR 2 Dublin; one
daughter Mary (Mrs. Glenn Butters) of Ed-
monton, Alberta; 10 grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by one son James
and five brothers, Joe, James, Frank, Tom
and Theo.
Friends were received at the Whitney-
Ribey funeral home,and a Mass of Christian
burial was celebrated at St. Columban
Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday. Father
T.J. Melady officiated. Burial was in the
church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Paul Melady, Mark
Melady, Michael Butters, Pat Melady, Tim
Melady and Kev Melady.
Flower bearers were Sandra Connolly,
Kathy Butters, Maureen Butters and Col-
leen Melady.

Sportsfest scheduled for Wingham
This year the Lake Huron Zone Recrea-
tion Association's "Sportsfest" will be
hosted by the town of Wingham, August 19,
20 and 21.
"Sportsfest" is a weekend festival of
sports and recreational activities for people
of all ages, groups and interests. The events
are designed to promote fun, fellowship and
good sportsmanship, with the emphasis on
participation rather than competition.
It is anticipated that almost 3,000 people
will be participating in over 25 different
events - water polo, outdoor badminton,
bridge, swimming, lawn darts, lawn bowl-
ing, skeet shooting, basketball, t -ball, shoot,
a canoe -portage race, trail riding, 2 -ball
golf, coed 3 -pitch baseball, ball hockey, ten-
nis, nature walks, orienteering, horseshoes,
skateboarding, flag football. darts, radio
Lawnbowling club holds
The Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club held its
June social at the club house Tuesday, June
28 with a pot luck supper at 6 p.m.
Following the supper four tables of euchre
and two of bridge were in play while a
number of bowlers were out on the greens.
Euchre winners were: Ladies high, Mary
Finlayson; Ladies lone hands, Gladys Doig;
Consolation, Gladys Wright; Men's high,
Jack Sinclair; Men's Lone hands, Wm. Kel-
ly and Consolation, Esther Brady (playing
social
as a man).
High bridge players were Grace Cornish
and Mel Brady while low scores were Eileen
Adamson and Jim Kelly.
About 30 members were present for the
supper and following the singing of Grace a
minute's silence was observed in memory of
two associate members Elmer Townsend
and Mary Coleman who entered into rest
since the last social. The next pot luck sup-
per will be July 25 at 6 p.m.

For those of you who are a little hesitant to
participate in a new sport or leisure activi-
ty, many of the events offered during this
weekend will include introductory sessions.
These sessions are designed to help ease you
into enjoying a new sport.
All participants who register for any of
the events will receive a recreation -oriented
gift in acknowledgement of their efforts to
help make Sportsfest a weekend of fun,
fellowship and good sportsmanship.
Should you not wish to actually par-
ticipate in a particular event, there will
always be room for onlookers to help cheer
team members on, as well as browse
through Wingham's cultural centres and
shops.
Plenty of opportunities will exist for you to
discuss the day's events with team
members or new found friends at the
seniors, adult, teen or pre -teen dances; over
a cup of coffee and a delicious pancake
breakfast; or by an evening campfire at the
Sportsfest campground.
The registration deadline to participate in
this fun -filled weekend is July 14, 1988, so be
sure to mark your calendar today. Registra-

be picked up at your local municipal or
recreation office or by contacting Joelle
