Hospital operating surplus is up $1,500 from 1987
The Seaforth Community Hospital heard
mostly good news when its finance commit-
tee made its report at the • 59th annual
meeting held Tuesday, June 28.
Sandra Smithers, committee chairman,'
reported the hospital occupancy rate was
lower at 60.3 per cent than in 1987 when it
was 63.5 per cent, but that operating surplus
for the year was $77,418, approximately
$1,500 higher. Ambulatory care visits were
up 7.4 per cent, from 6,499 to 6,980.
New equipment purchased totalled
$57,978, with approximately $42,000 related
to the MobWett 2 portable x-ray machine.
Ms. Smithers reported computer system
proposals had been looked at briefly and the
finance committee had recomended a
separate Implementation Committee be
formed to look at the purchase and phasing
in schedule of a computer system.
She also reported the Ambulance
Dispatch woqld be taken over:by the Central
Ambulance Communication Centre based in
London. When that happens she noted the
hospital will lose a subsidy of approximately
$35,000, generated annually by the dispatch
system.
The hospital received total memorial
donations of $4,181.40 in 1988, down from the
$6,432.40 in 1987.
Costs for therapeutics such as nursing
units, operating room, physiotherapy, phar-
macy and respiratory, increased from
$19,210 in 1987 to $22,404 in 1988. The cost for
other services such as the medical library,
medical records and administration, rose
from $150,874 to $166,410. Plant operation
and maintenance also increased - from
$150,840 in 1987 to $173,918 in 1988.
Costs for drugs, medical and surgical sup-
plies decreased from $145,414 to $138,555 and
the cost for, general services such as laun-
dry, linen, diet and houlekeeping decreased
from $114,814 to $115,209.
The administrative costs of the hospital
rose in 1988 to $151,587 from $142,968.42. The
areas showing the greatest increase includ-
ed education which doubled, going from
$8,436.68 in 1987 to $16,106 in 1988. The pur-
chase of office machinery and chairs, coupl-
ed with a rise in monies expended for public
relations, association fees, insurance and
postage costs, also contributed to the in-
crease in administration costs. There was
however, a significant decrease in printing
costs - from $20,173.26 to $13,664, and legal
fees - from $2,019 to $500.
In his report Tom Phillips, chairman of
the Property Committee, noted a new swit-

present system is at capacity, and added his
committee recommends the hospital stay
with Bell Canada. Bell has recommended
the SLIST system whi.h includes more ex-
tensions and larger capacity.
In the president's report Fred Tilley,
Chairman of the Board of Governors, prais-
ed the hospital for its tremendous work.
"It is gratifying to report that we have
been awarded Full Accreditation for two
years. I believe everyone deserves a great
deal of credit for the hard work and effort
they have put in, to turn our Accreditation
status around from provisional one year in
1985 to a two year Full Accreditation in
1987," he said.
Mr. Tilley also thanked members of the
hospital board the hospital staff, medical
staff and volunteers for their assistance
over the year.
