BA Funny Thin Happened.."
BY HEATHER MCILWRAITH
Wisecracks, puns and scenes which
border on indelicacy, combined with the
physical humor reminscent of 'My Three
Stooges', would appear the answer to the
modern day society's search for comic
relief.
"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to
the Forum", the mu; ical comedy by
Stephen Sondheim, that opened the 17th
summer season, of the Huron Country
Playhouse, proved popular with its audience
Wednesday night, inciting it to laughter with
its menagerie of mistaken identities and
masquerades. It was ahnost a comedy of
errors.
It's a memorable play,- one that combines
music and humor to tell the tale of a slave
that longs to be free, an aging man convinc-
ed he's a Romeo, and a young man in love.
But as memorable as it is, it's not
flawless. It's easy to get lost in all the humor
- •buried by the Witticisms and absurdities -
as the cast tries, perhaps a trifle too hard, to
be funny, and the plot suffers as a
consequence.
David Mallis gives a strong performance,
but is a tad too convincing in his role as the
wily slave Pseudolous. And as his sidekick
Hysterium, Christopher Barry comes
across more self contained than his name
might suggest.
The Proteans, played by Timothy Mur-
phy, David Talbot and Glen Peloso, while
they impel laughter at every turn, are
almost annoyingly funny, and certainly
detract from the other characters on stage.

boastful military man with a contract for
the delivery of a girl coveted by everybody

dn't find their business suffered any
because of e other merchants.
"A lot of people questioned why only
half the town was open," commented John
Hart, "but there were a lot of businesses
contacted and everyone marches to their
own tune."
He added as a result of the Moonlight
Ma .d: gess he is thinking of opening Hart
Ford Mercury Fridays until 9 p.m. - for the
summer at least.
"Moonlight Madness went well for us. We
were busy right until 11:30 p.m. and sold six
cars. We're happy. It's been a pretty slow
month."
Rod Lyons of Lyons Food Market in
Seaforth said his store did exceptionally
well.
"We did about double the normal volume
fora Friday," he said, "but, we made sure
we got the business. We put a special ad in
the newspaper and offered extremely good
items for sale. If you put in a hot enough ad
you can do the business. We sold a lot of
stuff below cost."
Mr. Lyons said he's found if people are
saving enough money they'll shop in your
store.
"I chalk up days like Friday to advertis-
ing. You sure don't make a lot of money but
you make a lot of friends. And when you're
busy, and the parking lot is full, it's good
for the town."
He added it is also good for the town for
everyone to get involved in a promotion
such as Moonlight Madness- at least once a
year.
"If the whole town were to open until 11
p.m. one Friday night a year it sure would
be beneficial to everybody," he said.
"But each business is different and
everyone knows their own business best.
Our volume and our business, for example,
is a lot different from everyone else's. Not

i
everyone buys a pair of pants every week."
"So it doesn't bother me when people
don't open for something like Moonlight

else, and David Nairn, as Lycus - an oily
girl -trader with a houseful of delectables
ready for the market, seem more relaxed in
their roles and are able to enchant the au-
dience, despite the unsavory traits of their
characters
Catherine J. Russell portrays Philia, the
most desirable item in the girl -traders col-
lection; Robert Burns is Hero, the romantic
young man eager to marry her; and Mary
Pitt is Domina, the nagging wife of tl.e ag-
ing, yet amorous Senex, played by Donald
Saunders. Carl Zvonkin is seen as a confus-
ed high -society Roman. -
Directed by Sandy ,Macdonald, with
choreography by Caroline Smith, "A Funny
Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum",
despite its pitfalls, is indeed funny. It runs at
the Huron Country Playhouse until July 9.
Madness. What bothers me is when it's a
holiday week and the stores still close on
Wednesday," he said.

THE BOOSTER CLUB for the Seaforth and District Community Centres recently
donated $3,700 to the centres, which was made since the beginning of 1988. Marjorie
Anderson, coordinator of the club, is seen here preparing a meal for a wedding at the
community centres. Mrs. Anderson says the booster club's goal each year Is $6,000,
and this year they're already over halfway there. Corbett photo.
