THE COOKIE WAR, a comedy by Kathleen McDonnell, was presented on Friday night
to open the Blyth Festival. Donna Farron shows her exasperation with the crunchy -
chewy cookies in this scene from the play in which vast cookie corporate powers wage
war in a rural Ontario Mennonite village. Submitted photo.

What happens when corporate lawyers in-
vade the simple lives of Ontario Mennonites
is the study of "The Coolkie War," the new
comedy which opened the fourteenth season
of the Blyth Festival on Friday evening:
The Cookie War, by Kathleen McDonnell,
tells the story of two Mennonite families in
rural Ontario who are hounded by two big ci-
ty lawyers representing huge cookie com-
panies. The cookie companies are vying for
the rights to the crunchy -chewy cookie
market, and seek a mennonite recipe for
rigglevake kucha (railroad cookies). The
rigglevake recipe is needed to prove the
crunchy -chewy recipe is not an original and
prevent either of the cookie corporate
powers from getting a patent on the recipe.
This plot is based upon the real life ex-
periences of Edna Staebler. Two con-
glomerates really did compete for rights to
the crunchy -chewy cookie market. When
one company had a patent put on the recipe,
lawyers from the competition set to work
trying to prove the recipe wasn't an
original, thereby eliminating the patent pro-
tection. In their cookbook search they found
the recipe for rigglevake kucha in the book

"Food that Really Schmecks" by Edna
Staebler.
The play, opens with lawyer Judith
O'Brien (played by Laurel Paetz) entering
The Doily Cart, a store run by May Reimer
and her son Ben (Donna Farron and Andrew
Wheeler). The manipulative, money -waving
New York city lawyer gets May signed on as
an "advisor on Mennonite culture" and gets
her to agree to convince her friend Addy
Weber (played by Judith Orban) to bake 40
dozen rigglevake cookies to be sent
stateside for testing.
But Addy and the rest of her family
(played by John Koensgen and Severn
Thompson), being old -order Mennonites are
reluctant to get involved in "worldly af-
fairs" in spite of O'Brien's attempts to win
them over with money, cuisinarts, and fail-
ing that -a subpeona. Orban, Koensgen and
Thompson are believable in their roles as
old -order Mennonites and provide the con-
trast for the materialistic, capitalist
American lawyers.
No sooner does obnoxious attorney Arnie
Leavitt (Vaughn Fulford) barge into the
scene than he is being thrown around by Ben
in a fast moving fight scene that livened up
both the stage and the audience.
Both these American attorneys (and our
cousins to the south In general) take quite a
ribbing in this production, mostly from
Wheeler who seems to get all the really fun-
ny lines and delivers them with just enough
bite.
The play's outcome is predictable but it's
fun getting there. The only real problem is
we maybe get there too soon, and near the
end things tie themselves up just a little too
quickly and a little too neatly.
