Lightning dangerous on golf course
Anyone who has ever been caught in a
thunder storm on the golf course realizes the
potential danger of the situation. Lightning
and golf just don't mix. Over the years
many injuries and deaths have been caused
by the awesome power of a lightning bolt
striking a golfer who was caught on the
course.
Lightning is so dangerous the infamous
rule book even has made provision for
golfers to discontinue play if they think
there might be a danger from lightning.
You're not allowed to quit when it's wet or
windy but you certainly may if lightning is
in the vicinity.
Golfers are affected by lightning more
than most other sportsmen. They are out in
the open, they are carrying metal clubs and
an umbrella is held high above them. To add
to the danger, the natural tendency for most
people is to take shelter under a large tree to
get out of the rain.
These factors Increase the danger from
lightning with the resulting statistics show-
ing even with continued education many
golfers are struck each year.
What should you do? First -prevention is
the first alternative. Keep an eye on the
weather. Don't head out on the course if
thunderstorms are predicted, and, if you're
already out when the rumbling starts head
for the clubhouse right away. In a tourna-
ment you do not have to wait for the siren to
leave the course but if the siren goes you
must discontinue play. You may not resume
until the siren sounds again.
In the event you are stranded out on the
course there are some key dos and don'ts.
Seek shelter in large dwellings or other
buildings protected from lightning or large
metal frame buildings, automobiles with
metal tops, trailers with metal bodies or
streets shielded by nearby buildings. If this
is impossible seek shelter in dense woods -
(avoid isolated trees), or depressed areas
(avoid hilltops and high places), or small
unprotected buildings in low areas.
Avoid open fields, athletic fields, golf
courses, swimming pools, lakes, seashores,
wire fences, clothelines, overhead wires,
and railroad tracks.
Golfers who own riding carts may be
reasonably protected against lightning by
following either of the two following
methods: 1. A whip antenna of a length that
will reach above the riders' heads. The
antenna should be positively bonded to the
steel section of the cart. 2. A metal top or
canopy.
Safety is very important to enjoy any
sport. Golf is no execption.

A
MESSAGE G FROM
RA D Y COLLINS
At Hully Gully, part of our success has been the ability to change
with the times. Recent market shifts have allowed us to greatly in-
crease our involvement in lawn and garden equipment, and to enter
the marine market, while continuing our strength in A.T. V. 's, motor-
cycles, and snowmobiles.
One of the biggest changes in our history will come this Saturday,
when we will close our Varna location, and consolidate all of our
resources into our London location. This was not an easy decision to
make, but we realized that it was necessary to centralize our opera-
tion in order to do a proper job of expanding our horizons even further.
All of the key Hully Gully people that you have come to rely on will
be under one roof at the corner of Wharncliffe and Southdale.
For your convenience, we've installed an in -watts parts line
(1-800-265-0926) and a fax line (685-9870).
We look forward to seeing all our old friends, and making many new
ones at Hully Gully in London.
