DON MACRAE 345-2842 or 345-2140 INTENDED FOR LAST WEEK Mr. James Snowden spent the Canada Day holiday with his brother in Calgary. Joe and Olga Eckert spent the holiday weekend at their cottage at Sauble Beach, also with them were John Eckert and friend, Joe, Jr., and friend from Kitchener and Stephen Eckert, Jr., from Egmondville and Dan Glanville of Walton. Mrs. Marie O'Rourke, Michelle O'Rourke and Kay Stapleton motored to Walkerton and Kincardine and called on Matt and Celeste McCreight at their cottage in Kin- cardine on the long weekend. THIS WEEK'S PEOPLE Dorothy Delaney, Threasa Cronin and Marie O'Rourke attended a bridal shower for Caroline Costello, daughter of Jack and Janette Costello, Mitchell, at the home of Tian Costello in Mitchell. Eileen MacRae and daughter Denise Kel- ly of Stratford attended a baby shower for a friend, Kathy Doherty (formerly Conrad) in Stratford on Sunday. Also attending the shower were: Mrs. Renata Rose, Darlene Rose, RR 5 Mitchell; and Heather Campbell of Brodhagen, all friends of Mrs. Doherty and baby Patrick. The sacrament of Confirmation was held in Dublin, with four parishes celebrating on May 24th in the St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church. Fifty-four candidates and their sponsors were from Dublin, St. Columban, Mitchell and Logan. Father Carrigan welcomed the Bishop, with Father Sipek of St. Columban, Father Loebach of Mitchell and Logan and Father Stand from Wingham were also in attendance. The 4th degree of Monsignor D.J. Egan, General Assembly, Knights of Columbus, Seaforth, formed a gu of honour for the Bishop and Candidates. Don and Eileen MacRae attended the funeral of his aunt, Mrs. Mary Furick in Port Huron on Saturday. She was a sister of Don's mother. CECILIA RYAN 345-2028 Mr. and Mrs. James O'Connor celebrated their 50th wedding annive rryy on Satur- day, May 21, 1988. A mass in thanksgiving was offered by Father A. Sipek at 3 p.m. in St. Columban Catholic Church with the celebrants, their family and relatives in attendance. Jim and Mary O'Connor were married on May 24, 19: in St. Columban Church by the late Father Jeremiah Dantzer. Their atten- dants were Norman O'Connor and the late Evelyn Malone. Flower girl was Shirley Feeney of Stratford. The O'Connors have three children, Dan of Wetaskiwin, Alberta; Ron O'Connor of Shelbourne; and Marie De Gaust of Inger- soll; 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Relatives attending the celebration were Mary Miller of Bradenton, Florida; Marie De Gaust, Ingersoll; Mr. and Mrs. Dan BRIDAL SHOWER O'Connor, Chrissie and Jim of Wetaskiwin, A bridal shower was held on Thursday Alberta; Mr. and Mrs. Burt Baldt and evening in the St. Columban parish hall for Samantha of Wetaskiwin, Alberta; Sister Carolyn O'Reilly. Friends and neighbors called into the Dublin Athletic Hall with best wishes. WI celebrates 85th anniversary Staffs Correspondent MRS. JOHN TEMPLEMAN 345-2346 Over 40 former members, 9-H leaders and guests, attended the 85th anniversary of the Staffs Women's Insitutue, held in the township hall on May 25. Doris miller, Public Relations Officer, and Kay Smale, Past President, greeted the guests on arrival with Ellen Vivian and Hazel Harburn in charge of registration. Guests were seated at the tea tables which had been decorated with flowers and favors. The president, Roberta Templeman, welcomed everyone and opened the after- noon's activities with a poem, "Today" followed by the Insititute Ode and Mary Stewart Collect. Stella Worden gave an in- teresting history of Staffa Women's In- stitute mentionning some special achievements and interesting projects and meetings which had been held. Several special guests were present, among them the London Area President, Irene Richardson, who brought greetings from the area and a message of challenge to continue on with achievements and projects in the years to come. She stated the Institute had accomplished much in the past 85 years. Irene was introduced by Grace Kerslake and thanked by Lillian Douglas. The Federated Women's Institute of On- tario's Board member for Subdivision 23, Marion Dougall, brought greetings, and along with Verle Mahon presented life memberships to two faithful members of Staffa WI - Ellen Vivian and Marion McCaughey. A memorial service for those departed, was given by Mrs. Mahon and the In Memorium Book was on display. Florence McPhail unveiled a plaque com- memorating the 85 years of service in the community of the Staffa WI, which will be hung in the township ball, and also acknowledged a congratulatory plaque from the Province of Ontario. A musical sing song of several old favorites hymns took place, with Marion McCaughey on the piano. Another sing -a- long with Mick Miller, led by Verle Mahon was also enjoyed. Two skits were enjoyed by all, 'Static', presented by Marjorie Drake and Lillian Douglas, and three Senior Citizens reminscing on the changed mean- ings of words over the past 85 years - with Margaret Kemp, Ellen Vivian and Orpha Norris participating. Greetings were brought from Perth South District by Barb MacLean, First Vice presi- dent, Jean Ratcliffe, District Curator and Helen Sinclair, Past President, from Laurine McIntosh, First Vice President of London Area and from Nancy Ross and Rob Black, resource specialists for Perth County. Staffa WI Curator Esther Smale had the Tweedsmuir books and scrap books on display. The anniversary cake was cut by Grace Kerslake, and everyone sang Happy Birth- day to the Staffa WI. She was a resident of the Mary Dale Senior Citizens Home in Port Huron. Funeral mass and committal service•was held on Saturday in the St. Marys Roman Catholic Church, Port Huron. Burial took place in the Holy Seplicore Cemetery in Detroit. She is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Allan Hatton (Ann MacRae) of Sarnia, Mrs. Rita Gooding (MacRae) of London and two nephews, Don MacRae of Dublin and Ken- neth of Silver Springs, Maryland. Joe and Olga Eckert attended the mar- riage of their daughter Joan to Tom Hum- mel in Petawawa on May 26th. Joan's attendants were her three daughters, Sandy, Tena and Tasha. BRIDAL SHOWER A miscellaneous bridal shower was held on Sunday afternoon in the St. Columban parish hall for Darlene Henderson. Pearl Henderson, mother of the bride-to- be, and her sister Debbie Henderson, along with relatives and neighbors of Alphonse and Annie Cronin, parents of the groom -to - be Jerome Cronin, attended the shower sponsored by Marie DeJong, Theresa Ad - mans and Ann Cronin. Darlene's marriage to Jerome Cronin will take place June 18 in the St. Columban Church.
