$45,000, grant given to Women. Today for Outreach
A total of $45,000 has been granted to
Women Today of Huron County to expand
the Health Outreach program. The grant
comes from the Ministry of Health, and will
be used to help women fight health
problems.
Beth Fulton, the president of Huron
County's. Women Today movement says the
$45,000 will go toward extending a project
Women Today has been sponsoring for the
past three years. The new funding will sup-
port the project for another two years.
The program consists of four major parts:
1. Educational Events for the promotion
of good health. These will be larger events
which deal with commonly recurring pro-
blems such as pre-menstrual syndrome,
menopause, smoking, and addictions. These
will be held in the larger centres in Huron
County, but will be open to the county at
large. Women Today will work closely with
existing health and social service agencies
to organize these events.
2. A mini workshop series will be offered,
and workshops will deal with topics such as
body image, self esteem, stress manage-
ment and peer counselling.
3. A facilitative training process will also
be sponsored. The goal of this series of
workshops is to offer those who attend skills
needed to start their own self help groups in
their own communities. An example of a self
help group which has started recently is the
Integration Action group. Integration Ac-
tion is a group which started because the
parents of handicapped children saw a need
to get their handicapped children in-
tegrated. There are other groups which
focus on parenting, midwifery, and a varie-
ty of subjects.
4. Public speaking is the fourth aspect of
the program, and help will be hired to coor-
dinate these sessions.
"The idea isfunding projects to promote
health rather than cure sickness," says Ms.
Fulton.
Women Today applied for the grant in
February, and received the full amount ap-
plied for. The program funded by the grant
will run for a total of 16 months, with a four
month interval between two eight month
periods running from August to March.
A large part of the grant will go toward
paying the salary of a coordinator for the
project. The coordinator will make $16,000
salary for the two years. Much of the pro-
gram involves volulnteers, but people will be
drawn from the community for the training
and public speaking workshops and will be
paid an honorarium.
"I felt really good that we got the grant, it
was something we worked hard for and we

"It's a service that Is really needed and
I'm glad to see it in my community."
The focus of the project will be on women
and women's issues, but it is not restricted
to them. Women Today is most familiar
with the issues surrounding women, and a
condition of the funding for their last project
was that it be restricted to women. This pro-
ject Is not necessarlly for women only.
Women Today has a membership of about
150, and approximately 10 per cent of these
are men. The group was started in 1980 by a
group of women who needed both emotional
support and education in certain areas. In
the group's early years it focused lamely on
family problems, but it has also been mvolv-
ed with creating self help groups, women's
employment, and daycare. The official pur-
pose of the group is to "raise the status and
awareness of women in Huron County."
