Two new OPP officers
BY LOU -ANN DE BRUYN
"Police are out there to help people.
Hopefully, I can help someone sometime."
For Provincial Constable Ron Szigeti
that is not only his vision of pollee officers
but also his desire. Szigeti, one of two new
police officers at the Goderich detachment
of the Ontario Provincial Police, has a long
future ahead of him to realize his dream.
Szigetl and fellow Provincial Constable
Mike Wildeboer have joined the local
detachment in the past few months. For •
them, this is their first posting as police
officers.
Szigeti, a native of Ridgeway, Ontario,
arrived at the Goderich OPP detachment
February 22 of this year to begin life as a
police officer.
At 21 years of age, this is not his first en-
counter with the law enforcement field.
Szigetl has been a customs officer, as
well as being involved in the drug unit, at
the Niagara Falls border crossing. He is
also a recent graduate of the Law. and
Security Program at Niagara College in
Welland. As well, Szigeti also has what he
calls "a touch of nursing experience."
Szigeti is the first member of his family,
which consists of mom, dad, two sisters,
and one brother, to become involved in
police work.
"It's just something I've always wanted
to do. It involves working inside and out-
side, and not just sitting behind a desk in
an office," he said.
For 21 -year-old Mike Wildeboer, work-
ing in the law enforcement field runs in the
family.
His father has retired from work with
the OPP while one brother is a Metro
police officer and another brother is a
Toronto lawyer. Only his mother isn't in-
volved in the field of law enforcement.
Wildeboer has geared his life around
becoming a police officer, something he
saw realized April 25 upon his arrival in
Goderich.
After finishing Grade 13 in Guelph,
Wildeboer entered the Law and Security
Program at Mohawk College in Hamilton
from which be graduated in 1987. He was
an investigator for Shoppers Drug Mart
and worked for two years as an enforce-
ment officer with at the Grand River Con-
servation Authority.
Both Wildeboer and Szigeti noted per-
sons who study law and security usually
end up working in customs offices or police
departments. Wildeboer thought about 30
to 40 per cent of program graduates enter
police work.
Wildeboer noted police departments,
whether municipal or OPP detachments,
are a public service rather than something
that should be feared. Although both
Wildeboer and Szigeti carry handguns,
and are qualified to handle shotguns and
semi -automatics as well, neither of them
mentionned anything about guns aside

NEW CONSTABLES - The Goderich OPP recently welcomed two new police con-
stables to its detachment. Provincial Constable Ron Szigeti, left, and Provincial Con-
stable Mike Wildeboer, right, are enjoying work at the OPP base outside of Goderich.

from the fact that they could use them if a
situation arose.
How they began their lives as police of-
ficers is fairly simple. Both applied to and
were accepted by the Ontario Provincial
Police. Following their acceptance, they
participated in a three week, training
period at the OPP Academy in Brampton.
How they arrived in Goderich is another
matter.
"They tell you where you are going,"
Szigeti said, although he did say police of-
ficers could ask for a posting.
While Szigeti asked to be stationed at
Kingston, Wildeboer noted he had re-
quested anywhere in OPP District 6, which
includes Mount Forest, Guelph, Owen
Sound, Kincardine and Goderich.
"You don't know where you are going
until you get that little letter in the mail
and then it is only tentative until you get
there," Wildeboer noted.
Both enjoy living and working in
Goderich, especially Wildeboer who is an
avid summer enthusiast.
For their first year at the Goderich OPP,
both Wildeboer and Szigeti are involved in
training sessions and learning aspects of
police work. This is done through school-
ing sessions, such as the one Szigeti will at-
tend for nine weeks at the Ontario Police
College, as well as being assigned
coaching officers.
Wildeboer is coached by Constable Eric
Goss while Szigeti's coach is Constable
Martin Brown.
"We basically try to teach them the
basic rules of what they have to learn to be
a police officers. They get the classroom
instruction (at the academy and the col-
lege) and we do the field work, the prac-
tical work – street sense," Const. Goss
explained.
While both Szigeti and Wildeboer enjoy
working at the local OPP detachment,
they did raise one interesting point – not
only are they the youngest officers, but
they are also the only single officers.
The addition of Constables Wildeboer
and Szigeti brings the total staff of the
Goderich OPP detachment to 29 (three
corporals, one sergeant, 16 constables, five
civilian dispatchers, two civilian
secretaries, and two civilian janitors).
