The Seaforth Merchants Senior Mens
Hardball team is anticipating a productive
1988 season. Eight players have returned
from last year's team while seven new
faces, including three pitchers, strengthen
the roster.
"Offensively we're a little bit stronger
with the acquisition of new players," said.
Coach Marc Robinet.
"We have a little more power than last
year, and should be a stronger hitting
team."
Defensively Coach Robinet said his team
has improved as well. Veteran pitchers
Clendon Coombs and Robinet himself, will
be joined on the mound by Dave Akey,
Scott Driscoll and Gary Eisler, giving the
Merchants more versatility. Only Kevin
Bennett, who pitched for the Merchants in
their first season, has retired.
Rounding out the Merchants team are
veterans Don Williamson, Jim Campbell,
John Cairns, Gerry Feeney, Marty Bedard
and Joe Aubin. Newcomers are Ray
Anstett Jr., Jeff Dupuis, Mike Maxwell
and David Hulley.
"Defensively I think we've improved. If
we can cut down on the errors that cost us
a lot of one -run ball games last year, we
should be able to change things around this
r .
year," said Coach Robinet, wh a 1987
team finished with a record of se n wins,
16 losses and one tie.
This year the Merchants hope o finish
with at least a 15 and nine record in its 24
game schedule.
"Of course our major objective is to get
to the All Ontario tournament to be held in
Exeter and Seaforth in September," said
Coach Robinet.
"I'm looking for the new players to get a
lot of experience during the season - some
Haven't played hardball for several years -
and then, •I hope all team members,
veterans ' and rookies, can bring
everything to a peak in time for the
playoffs."
They're already off to a good start. With
10-1practices under their belt, Coach
Rob et said the Merchants look "quite
res " for their opening doubleheader
aga' t Walkerton on Sunday - game time
noon.
The',Merchants are part of a four -team
league which also includes Walkerton,
Strathrpy and Exeter. They will play each
of theseiteams six times during the regular

with six ames against junior teams from
