HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1988-04-20, Page 13Premier race driver in Seaforth today
He spends his weekends dominating the
race tracks in Canada. He spend his
weekdays teaching others how to do it. And
on Wednesday he'll be at Seaforth's Home
and Garden Show.
Richard Spenard is Canada's most suc-
cessful race driver, both on the track and in
the classroom. In 1986, he won the Canadian
Tire Formula 2000 championship, the
Player's Challenge Series and finished se-
cond in the Rothmans/Porsche Challenge.
In 1987, Richard turned in another brilliant
performance, winning the Rothman's
Porsche series and finishime fourth in the
Player's Challenge Series.
A race drive for 14 years and an instructor
for nine, Spenard is uniquely qualified as
chief instructor at the Spenard/David Rac-
ing School, also sponsored by Motomaster.
He has raced and won in the showroom
stock series for Hondas, Porsches and
Camaros/Firebirds. He has recorded vic-
tories in Formula Fords, the more powerful
Formula 2000 and Formula Atlantic cars,
and earned numerous pole positions and lap
records in IMSA GTO prototypes and SCCA
Trans -Am races.
As one of the top three drivers in the 1986
Rothmans -Porsche Challenge, Richard
earned an invitation last year to join a
prestigious team of Canadians in an assault
on the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Under Canadian Tire/Motomaster spon-
sorship, Spenard will again lead the charge
in the prestigious Rothman's/Porsche and
GM/Player's Challenge Series, competing
for well over $750,000 in prize money.
Spenard, formerly of Montreal, is single
and lives in Belleville, Ontario, close to his
racing school at Shannonville Motorsport
Park.
Golf course gets earliest start
Yet another reco was broken when the
loc: golf course opened for the earliest time
ever.
April 9 the weather was cold but sunny
and golfers headed out with great expecta-
tions. For some the first round of the season
was a pleasant surprise, the ball going
generally in the direction intended, and the
shots adding up to a respectable
mumber...(by April standards). Unfor-
tunately for other players, the errant shots
of last fall resurfaced like a spring flower,
but with none of the beauty. It's amazing
how the body and mind can forget so much
over the winter,- yet remember just how to
accomplish a wicked slice, duck hook, or
worst of all the dreaded shank!
The good news of course was that excuses
were as abundant as the need for them.
After all it was only April, the course had
just opened, it was cold, the ground was soft,
there was no roll, the body wag gtifr tl,a

body was older, and so on and so on. II don't
mind listening because I know that between
now and September I'll have heard every
excuse imaginable and some beyond im-
agination. I will certainly keep you posted if
II hear one I've never heard before.
This is the 10th year for the "On The
Greens" column and over the years I have
touched on many topics related to golf.
Hopefully I can continue to keep golfers,
young and old, up to date on items of interest
at the local level as well as further afield.
Now that golf season is underway I'd like
to remind you all that ladies' night will
begin the first Monday of May with a

potluck supper and, if the weather
cooperates, golf as well.
Men's night is scheduled for Tuesday
nights this year with the first Tuesday in
May planned as opening night. Hopefully I'll
have more information about these and
other events next week.
Finally I hope to end each column with a
"Rule of the Week" so here goes:
17-1/5 Question: A player holds the
flagstick with one hand and holes a short
putt, gripping the putter with his other hand.
Is this permissible?
Answer: Yes, provided the flagstick has
been removed from the hole and the ball
therefore does not strike it. If the ball were
to strike the flagstick a breach of rule 17-3a
would occur (resulting in a 2 stroke
penalty).
