One billion litres of milk consumed in Ontario in 1987 Ontario consumers drank, cooked with and otherwise consumed more than a billion litres of fluid milk in 1987, a record amount for the province. Actual sales were 1.001 billion litres, the first time annual sales have topped the billion litre mark, and a milestone for The Ontario Milk Marketing Board (OMMB), Fluid milk refers to milk packaged and sold for the table market, such as standard milk, 2 percent, skim milk, buttermilk and chocolate milk. The previous record, set in 1986, was sales of more than 977 million litres. The OMMB attributes the strong sales of fluid products to several factors. A healthy provincial economy means consumers have more disposable income. At the same time, the relative strength of the provincial economy compared to the rest of the coun- try means that many people from other parts of Canada are moving to Ontario to find work. In the past two years the Ontario population has grown by about 245,000 to 9.3 million. Fluid milk sales have gone up even faster than the population increase. Per capita consumption has increased steadily over the last two years from a low of l t i litres per year in isea to about 198 lures per year for 1987. Also contributing to healthy sales has been price stability. The last time producers received an increase in the price they are paid for fluid milk was three years ago. Promotion of fluid milk consumption by the OMMB is also considered an important factor in the strength of the sector. The Board budgets close to $8 million a year for a variety of advertising and nutrition pro- grams. These include tv and radio com- mercials, print advertisements and the ex- tremely popular Milk Calendar. ttammtx cm* CPHELANS PLACE SERVICE) REFRIGERATION AND MAJOR APPLIANCE REPAIRS MONDAY - Friday 8:30 - 5:00 SATURDAY 9:00 - 1:00 237 Huron Rd., Sebringvllle, Ont.
