hosted six teams from Southwestern Ontario. 150 competitors
turned up for the tournament, 11 of them from Seaforth. Com-
petitors are judged in two events: kata, which is a series of martial
movements; and sparring, which Is a mock fight. Dan Glanville
placed first in kata and second in sparring, Mark McGrath won in
Kato, Jean Hasson was second in kata and third In sparring, and
Craig McGrath placed second in sparring and third in kata. Cor-

Seaforth girl wins top sports awards
Many people can say they have more than
one favorite sport as long as it can be viewed
on TV from a comfortable couch in their liv-
ing room. Few, however, have the ability or
desire to channel that passive devotion into
a high level of active participation.
Seaforth's Denise Morey, a student at St.
Lawrence College in Kingston, has both the
talent and the hunger to excel at any
number of sports.
Just recently she captured the female
athlete of the year award for her excellence
in two varsity sports.
The 20 -year-old led the Vikings to the On-
tario Colleges Athletic Association soccer
championship, scoring seven of the team's
eight goals in tournament play.
In basketball, Denise, playing point
guard, was the team's leading scorer with a
15.7 points -per -game average. She was nam-
ed an OCAA second -team all-star. •
Denise was selected as the most valuable
player for both St. Lawrence teams, sharing
the honor in soccer with linemate Glenys
Fraser.
But she says, having to balance her
studies while participating in two varsity
sports was more a labor of love than a
chore.
"Back in September, both sports were go-
ing on at the same time. For the first three
or four weeks, I never had a night off from
practice and I sometimes had double -
practice days. It was never too much though
because I loved what I was doing. Practices
would take up about two hours a night and
then I would go home to study," she said.
Her good work in the classroom has not
gone unnoticed. In 1987, she made it onto the
principal's list for her strong academic
standing combined with her unyielding con-
tribution to school life.
Denise is in the second year of a three-
year behavioral science program. She's in
the 'middle of a six-week placement at
Thistletown Regional Centre in Toronto,
where she works in a group home setting for
mentally handicapped children.
"In Grade 12, I took a course called adap-
tive aquatics that taught how to teach swim-
ming to handicapped kids. That's what got
me started int aht area,"she said.
He first start in athletics came at a much
earlier date.
"I joined my first soccer league when I
was 11 -years -old and played in the London
District League until I was 18. I started in
basketball in Grade 9. I owe a lot to my high
school coach Ed Pelss...he taught me
everything I know about basketball."
Denise said coming from a small town on-
ly helped matters.
"We didn't have a movie theatre, so
sports was a great way to spend the time
with your friends," she said.
It was time well spent. Diana Drury,
coach of both the women's soccer and
basketball teams at St. Lawrence, said
Denise was a dominant force in both sports.
"Her footwork is amazing. She would
have two defenders on her and she would
still manage to dribble the ball between
them and get a good shot on net."
"On the basketball court, she's very
quick, agile and has a very accurate shot
from the outside."
Parr Line wins mens 'B' broomball
RAIDERS 1 -PARR LINE 2
Len Vanwanderen kept a steady pace with
a couple of triumphant goals off superb
passing from Verne Thompson, Paul Nurse
and Don Wise. By winning this game Parr
Line became the champs.
However, the Raiders put up an excellent
show with a hot goal by Steve VanDyke off a
horrifying pass from Tony Arts and Ken
Decorte. Steve slapped the ball directly into
the net. Unfortunately not enough time re-
mained on the clock for the Raiders to be
able to tie the game up.
There's always next year guys. A great
season for everyone.
