Spring destined the time to get fit
Spring is a notable time of year for fitness.
It seems the general public is worried about
whether or not they will fit into those same
shorts they wore last year, or maybe the
warmer weather is more incentive to get out
and do something physical.
Whatever the reason, there are a lot of
facilities in the Seaforth area which provide
opportunities for people to get back in
u
shape. Swimming, weightlifting and fitness
training, are just some of the avenues peo-
ple are pursuing, and when they are combin-
ed with a proper diet they can lead to some
appreciable changes in physical fitness.
A big part of any sport is doing it right, but
in weightlifting proper form is essential to
avoid injury and doing more harm than
good. Vanastra recreation centre has a

fitness room as well as the information
necessary to get a beginner started on a
program.
On Saturday, April 30 a day -long
workshop will be held at the centre beginn-
ing at 9 a.m. Kevin Duguay, a qualified in-
structor for Fergus, is a serious weightlifter
and will be running the program at a cost of
$32 to participants. The workshop fee in-
cludes a one month membership to
Vanastra Recreation Centre. Mr. Duguay
will set up those who attend on a personal
fitness program for either general fitness or
a program designed to enhance ability at a
particular sport.
The program will include an introduction
to the Global gym and will deal with proper
diet and nutrition.
But for those who can't attend the
workshop, Canada's Food Guide provides
guidelines to proper nutrition. A very basic
plan from the guide is to"eat a variety of
foods from each group every day." Meat,
fish, poultry and alternates should be con-
sumed at a rate of two servings per day;
fruits and vegetables are perhaps most im-
portant with four to five servings recom-
mended; breads and cereals are recom-
mended at 3-5 servings; and milk and milk
products vary depending on age. Children of
up to 11 years should get two to three serv-
ings, adolescents three to four servings,
pregnant and nursing women three to four
servings, and adults only two.
Working out on weights always starts
away from the weights. One of the most im-
portant aspects of the workout is the warm
up, to raise both the body and deep muscle
temperatures to stretch the ligaments and
other collagenous tissues permitting
greater range of movement and to help
avoid injury during exercise.
Canada Games Complex information
states "As cellular temperature increases it
is accompanied by a corresponding increase
in the rate of exchange of oxygen from the
blood to the tissues. Physical work capacity
is increased following a warm up. Nerve im-
pulses increase, heart rate, blood pressure
and respiratory rate are also increased.
A warm up routine can vary widely depen-
ding on the individual, but stretching and
light strengthening exercises should be
