HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1988-04-06, Page 9Mel Merriam sets the alleys on fire Because of a slight mechanical malfunc- tion (my knee hit the power button and dumped my first fantastic and memorable effort) this is my second attempt at creating a sizzling, tension filled report for all you Thursday righters. In certain circles it is common knowledge that my memory recall is known for its brevity and so this report will bear absolutely no similarity to its predecessor. Therefore having securely tied my right leg far, far away from the power source I am ready to begin ... again. You realize if I had used a pencil instead of a computer this never would have happened. Last week I advised all who would listen it was time to dig deep within themselves for those big games and at least some of you listened. Mel Merriam set the alleys on fire with two thunderous personal high singles (232, 290) and in doing so helped his team re- tain their tenuous hold on first place for yet another week. Crepitating Neil Beuerman was just as busy coming to the aid of his team. His barrier shattering 756 triple and his pop producing 312 single not only brought the Misfits within four points of the leaders but they earned him both Men's weekly high crowns. Marvelous Murray Bennewies also broke the 711 plateau with a scintillating 725 triple. Joanne (fall pins fall) Knights was once again in there trying to regain the capricious women's weekly high singles crown bowling a sizzling 218, but Pat (POW) Deighton had other ideas on the crown's final resting place. POW was ready for the challenge and she bowled her way to another Season High Honor, this time in the singles category, with a stupendous 280. This single along with her mighty 619 triple destined hgy to become the holder of both Women's `Weekly crowns. However even Pat's valiant effort was not enough to propel the super wonderful Highballers anywhere near the top spot (only a great deal of creative figure manipulation could ac- complish such a feat but then anything is possible - right team). As I warned you ear- ly this is nothing like my first draft but I will keep trying. Lions hold slight lead in bowling playoff race As you know it is much easier to write an action parked, tension filled report when the point spread is still close enough to make the final outcome uncertain. Therefore I gratefully acknowledge the help of the Ex- pos, the Misfits and Team Three for their unstinting efforts to keep the tension moun- ting. With only one week left in our playoffs it is still anybody's game. The Energetic Ex- pos have 24 big points but will they choke in the ninth like their baseball counterparts ... only time will tell. The tenacious efforts of the members of Team -Three have boosted then into sole possession of second place with 21 points ... well within striking distance and in a complete reversal of their season's performance those Magnificent Misfits have bowled their way into third spot with a too close 20 points. And just to make things even more exciting two of the three teams in contention for the Play -Off crown will meet on . the final night of play. I couldn't have planned it better if I had tried. One point one way or another could mean the difference between cheers and tears. Good luck teams! ! ! As for the rest of us (you didn't think I would forget you) Sw- ingers - 17, Wingers - 14, Highballers ,- 12. One of us will be playing the role of king maker or king breaker. Before I conclude this report I am obligated to report two unrelated but newsworthy facts. A long, long time ago in a far, far away bowling alley a certain still unidentified bowler skittled a thunderous 125 single. Since then little has been heard of this mysterious personage but it has been brought to my attention that said bowler has now equalled that singles feat in the triple catgory with a whopping 494 triple. Will this string of records never cease. The second item has to do with our glorious and ever present Rookie (who wanted his name into the paper one last time before the season ended). Last Thursday marked the high point in Bob's brief but illustrious rookie season when he (in the absence of marvelous Marr), bowled a 199 ... the highest score of his entire team for the second game. Way to go Rookie. Pee Wees hang up skates in championship After eliminating Zurich in two games straight the Pee Wee boys hockey team took on Mitchell in their league championship round. Seaforth lost to this group in the Young Canada Week in overtime - so knew it was going to be some tough hockey. The first game was in Mitchell, March 22 and Seaforth was certainly holding its own and Mitchell knew the team was there to play hockey. Seaforth was ahead at the end of the second period but Mitchell tied it up in the third. They went ahead in the overtime period and Seaforth tied it up. It ended in a 7 all tie. Scoring for Seaforth were Jason Beutten- miller, Brian Melady (a hat trick plus one) Kalen Carroll and Steve Papple. Assists to Paul Dolmage, Kalen Carroll and Steve Papple. The second game in Seaforth was a real downer for the fans. Although the reffing was better Seaforth could not capitalize on Mitchell sitting in the box. Mitchell won that game and it was back to Mitchell March 29. Mitchell came on strong and Seaforth was trying to catch up but that good old clock ran out. Final score 11-7. The final game was Saturday, April 2 where Seaforth tried their hardest not to hang up their skates. After no scoring in the first period, Mitchell started the scoring in the second. Seaforth was right behind them but once again Mitchell went ahead and final score was 4-2. Congratulations to the entire team for great effort and sportsmanship. Thanks also goes to the coaches and all who helped.
