Research study
commissioned
on county's
development
For a number of years now increasing
numbers of visitors have been coming to
Huron. It is now time to review this activity
so that Huron can use it to best advantage,
and plan better for both its residents and
visitors. -
The Huron County office of Planning and
Development has therefore commissioned a
research study of tourism development
within the County. This project is part of a
longer term study concerning the potential
for tourism development within the County.
The present project will focus on local
residents' attitudes and reactions to
tourism. It is based on the belief the aspira-
tions of the local communities are central to
a healthy tourist indistry, and to the
'welcoming feel' of a destination area. For
this reason a full spectrum of the views held
by residents of the county is being sought.
The study will involve interviews with a
range of residents, and community and
tourist industry leaders. The objective is to
discover the major concerns, both positive
and negative, surrounding tourism. Follow-
ing the interviews, a survey of residents will
be made to explore these issues in greater
detail. Should residents receive a survey
form, they are urged to respond, even if they
believe that they have little to offer the
study. The aim of the study is to hear the full
range of opinion about tourists and visitors.
Because a limited number of survey
forms are sent out it is important those who
receive them attempt to complete their
surveys and return them. "In an important
way those who are sent a survey 'represent'
others in the County, who may hold similar
views" says Mr. Simmons. Everyone's
views are therefore important to the study.
The study is being undertaken by David
Simmons, a visiting faculty member of Lin-
coln University College, New Zealand. Mr.
Simmons has been involved in a number of
tourism studies in New Zealand and while in
Canada is based at the University of
Waterloo. The present study will contribute
to his Doctoral research.

better catch in the spring
• Our Honda ATV & broadcast spreader offer an even spread with little

HEALTH ON THE HILL
A series of bi-weekly reviews of activities at
SEAFORTH COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
Ten Years Of Service
Staff members celebrating over 10 years of service this month are Betty Coleman
(Personnel), Donald Matthews (Maintenance), Lillian Matzold (Switchboard), June
Saldivar (Nursing) and Helen Stewart (Nursing).
Changes Will Not Effect Service
Commening on April 15, ambulance Dads will be answered by Control Ambulance
Communications Centre in London rather than by the hospital. All other ar-
rangements remain the same. The calling number continues as 527-1751 and there
is no change in the service provided by Seaforth District Ambulance Service which
also will accommodate the local termination of an emergency line thus providing
local back up service.
The change results from a reorganization of district ambulance service being car-
ried out by the Ministry.
Group Activities Aid Patients
Activation group programs are a highlight of activities at the hospital. Included
in the activities are plant therapy which begins with planting flower seedlings thus
sparking an interest in Spring. Rug hooking is underway also and the finished pro-
duct will be displayed th the hospital.
Set Dates For Penny Sale
For Many years a major source of the funds with which the Hospital Auxiliary
assists the hospital is the annual penny sale. This year the popular event is scheduled
for April 25 to May 6 in the former Image Cleaner store, 6 Main Street S. The draw
takes place on May 7.
Communications Canada Seeks Help
The hospital is cooperating with the federal Ministry of Communications in a
survey to locate a list of those people who would wish to take part in a project being
undertaken by the Ministry. At the moment the project involves the compilation
of a list of people who have a severe speech impairment. Also being sought is a list
of people who are hearing impaired and have a reading comprehension of less than
a Grade 4 level. Additional information may be obtained by writing Deborah Finn,
Communications Canada, Communications Research Centre, P.O. Box 11490, Sta-
tion H, Ottawa, Ontario, K2H 8S2 or from the hospital.
