Seaforth couple wed 50 years
Harold and Mary Coleman will be 50
years wed on April 9, 1988.
The couple, who have resided in Seaforth
for 30 years, are the parents of four
children - Donald, John, Joan and Allen,
and also have five grandchildren.
The following is a write-up about their
wedding, as it appeared in April 22, 1938
edition of The Huron Expositor.
"A quiet but pretty wedding took place
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Allen,
Cromarty, on Saturday, April 9, 1938 at
12:00, when their only daughter Mary
Elizabeth became the bride of Harold
James Coleman, son of Robert Coleman
and the late Mrs. Coleman of Staffa.
Rev. James Reidie officiated. The bride
entered the parlor on the arm of her father
to the Wedding March, played by her
sister-in-law Mrs. Ernest Allen.
The bride looked charming in a gown of
navy triple sheer stripe and was attended
by her cousin, Grace McLachlan.
The groom was attended by his brother,
Clarence Coleman. Dinner was served to
20 guests by Margaret Allen, Mae Quance
and Mrs. Ken McKellar.
After a honeymoon to eastern parts, the
happy couple will reside on the groom's
farm west of Staffa."

Commission setts
50 Imira
racing dates
The Ontario Racing Commission has apo
proved an application from the Woolwich
Agricultural Society for 50 racing dates and
Elmira Raceway will open its 1988 harness
racing season with a 1:30 pm matinee card
on Saturday, April 2.
And, to start the season off right for
Elmira's fans, the raceway is offering free
admission for the season's opener. The new
management committee, which consists of
Paul Ritter, Jim McLeod, Abner B. Martin,
Dr. Ted Clarke and Milo Shantz has also an-
nounced that the admission fee has been
reduced for the coming season. The new ad-
mission price will be $2.00, down .50 cents
from last year.
Elmira Raceway's 1988 schedule is very
similar to that of previous seasons.
Saturday afternoon matinee programs
will continue until April 30. Friday night
racing will begin on May 6. Elmira's twice a
week schedule (Monday and Friday) starts
with"an afternoon card on Monday, May 23.
After that, Monday -Friday night racing con-
tinues until September 3.
A matinee program on Labor Day,
September 5, completes the twice a week
schedule. Elmira will conclude its 1988
season with seven matinee cards in October
and November. They will race every Satur-
day afternoon until November 5, and also on
Thanksgiving Day, Monday, October 10.
Elmira will host three Ontario Sires
Stakes events and one Trillium Series event
for two-year-old pacing fillies. The three-
year-old colt trotters go postward on June
17, two-year-old trotting colts are scheduled
to compete on June 24 and the final O.S.S.
event is scheduled for July 15 when the two-
year-old pacing colts will be in action.
The trillium series event will be contested
on July 1.
The raceway's management committee
has also announced that Leo McReavy, an
18 year veteran,in the harness racing in-
dustry has been named to the position of
Operations manager, and Ken Middleton,
who has 23 years experience in horse racing,
will hold the post of race secretary and
public relations director.
Mr. McReavy spent 17 years at
Orangeville Raceway, and was part of the
management team that opened that track in
May, 1970. McReavy was part of the team
that made Orangeville Raceway into one of
the most successful B tracks in Ontario and
he is confident that Elmira can look forward
to a successful season in 1988. "With good
racng and some good promotion, I'm sure
that this season will be very rewarding, not
only for our fans, but for our horsemen too,"
he said.
Middleton was also enthusiastic about the
upcoming season. "I think that we'll be able
to offer top class racing this year, and the
reduced admission fee should also help us
attract new fans," he said. "We're hoping
for good weather for our opening card and
expect a good turnout with our free admis-
sion offer," he continued.
