Horticultural society gets tips on improving Heflsc'II

The Hensall and District Horticultural
Society met on Monday, March 21 with
many new members present. Diane
Gerstenkorn chaired the meeting in the
absence of president Brenda Russell. A
poem was, read : ollowed by new business.
The Society will be placing a plant in Hen -
sail United and Carmel Presbyterian.Chur-
ches for Easter.
Richard Peckham introduced Bob
Whitlock who is from the Master Gardeners
Program in London. Mr. Whitlock spoke to
the large audience on how to join the Master
Gardeners Program and of all of the ac-
tivities in which he is involved. He gave a
great many tips on all kinds of plants and
bushes to consider adding to the village
gardens and flower beds. He also spoke on
ways to improve and care for Hensall's
wooden flower boxes.
The Master Gardeners have a "Hot Line"
to answer any questions about gardening.
The number is 473-9727. Jan Baker thanked
Mr. Whitlock for coming to the meeting and
sharing his knowledge and creative ideas
with us.
A light lunch was served by Eileen Rennie
and Marg Cole. Everyone enjoyed the
refreshments as well as the time to chat.
The next meeting will be held on May 30
with a Chinese Auction. Be sure to mark the
date on your calendar and join the Hehsell
and District Horticultural Society for a fun
and informative evening.
HENSALL VENTURERS
On Sunday, March 13 the First Hensel]
Venturers went to the Toronto Sports Fair in
Toronto. The group of six venturers and two
advisors left Hensall at 7:30 p.m. and arriv-
ed at Exhibition Grounds at about 9:30 p.m.
This Grip has become a yearly tradition 01
the group. The guys enjoyed the opporunity
to look at and purchase some new
equipment.
Venturers Mark Brock, Andy Phillips,
Jason Phillips, Jeff Clarke and Scott Mur-
ray and advisors Jerry Nielands and Bill
Forrest would like to say a special Thank -
You to Bob Eris for the use of his van which
allowed the group to make the trip in
comfort.
PASSION SUNDAY
Passion Sunday services were well at-
tended at Hensall United Church. Gerry
Drysdale read the Minutes for Missions
"Bringing healing and hope."
The Junior Choir performed "Jerusalem"
with Debbie Wood at piano. The children's
tower has grown to the cross, it was draped
in sorrow and added to it were the crown of
thorns, the tomb and the stone. All of the
children joined in prayer.
Mind+ Bell assisted in the reading of the
scripture by Rev. Douglas Wright. Rev.
Wright's sermon was "reflections on the
Cross."
Ushers were Harold Parsons, Doug Cook,
Mervin Fields and Tom Bailey. Greeting
parishioners at the door was Jayne Consitt,
a member of the Official Board.
Easter services will be held on Thursday,
March 31 at 7 p.m., Easter sunrise service
at 7 a.m. on April 3, and Easter Worship Ser-
vice at 11 a.m. on April 3.
The Annual Beef Barbecue will be held
Thursday, April 14 at the Hensall United
Church. Sittings are at 5 and 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are available now from U.C.W.
members.
The Bible Study Group will meet on Tues-
day at 10 a.m.
`Reverend Doug Wright and Rev. Cheryl -
Ann Stadelbauee.Sampa will be leading a
study on the content and implications of the
United, Churches' latest sexuality study
document. What does it say? What does it
mean? Where does it go from here? How
can individuals respond? Offer your imput
at Egmondville United Church on Thursday.
The two Hydragea Plants at the front of
the church were placed there compliments
of the Hensall and Distric Horticultural
Society to help the church celebrate Easter.
RINGETTE NEWS
Two young ladies from Hensel] travelled
to Kitchener over the weekend as part of the
Exeter Petites Ringette Team. Cara
Gardener and Carrolyn Rimmel waan en-
oyed their stay in the tWin cities and were
ental in helping their team. The Ex-
eter team won its first three games but was
defeated 4-3 in the fourth by an extremely
tough team from Woollch Township. More
than 70 teams took part in this Region:
Tournament. Carrolyn and Cara had a great
weekend and enjoyed swimming and eating
out. The Exeter Petites played on Monday
night against Mitchell in the area finals.

GYMNASTICS CLUB •
Members of the Hensall Gymnastics. Club
had the opportunity to strut their stuff on
Wednesday evening. A large audience of
parents and friends were on hand to watch
the many youngsters perform their
routines. Teachers Star Jesney and Leigh
Barnard did a great job with a large and en-
thusiastic group.
Following the exhibition refreshments
were served. The club would like to thank
Hensall Public School for the use of their
gym every Wednesday evening as well as all
of the parents who helped in any way. See

Hensall Hockey ent2aCEAY were well
satisfied over the weekend as almost all
minor hockey teams were engaged In hair-
raising competition. The Tykes, Novice,
Atoms and Pee Wees were all in Huron Divi-
sion Finals in Bayfield and Goderich while
the Bantams played at home. Everyone of
the home teams, and more importantly
every player and coach, gave their all. Hen,
sail's superiority in the sport was evident in
the results. Congratulations to all of the
teams and good luck to those who have still
to play.
TYKES
The Tykes played three games in Bayfield
on the way to their title as "B" Runners Up.
In the first game they were defeated by a
very strong team from Zurich. Hensall's
two goals were scored by Johnathon Camp-
bell and Ryan Munn on their way to a 13-2
loss to Zurich.
In the second game they were more even-
ly matched with Bayfield and emerged as
6-1 victors. Scoring for Hensall were Pa
Cooper with 3, Jeff Campbell with 2 and a
single by Ryan Munn.
In the "B" Championship game Hensall
was put out by Goderich in a close and ex-
citing match. Goderich scored the winning
goal with less than one minute remaining on
the clock. The final score was 2-1 for
Goderieh with Ryan Munn scoring Hensall's
goal.
NOVICE
The strong Novice Team won its first two
games and found itself losing to Huron Park
in the final to become "A" Runners Up.
In their first match the Novice defeated
the home team, Goderich, 4-0 with goals by
Jamie Campbell and a couple of real heart -
stopping goals and singles by Mark Bell and
Queensway residents
study Pitcairn Island
Queensway residents enjoyed a relaxing
tea party and time or reminiscing in the sun
room on Monday. Hensall United church
ladies visited and played Bingo in the after-
noon. The residents really appreciated the
special prizes provided by the ladies.
Tuesday afternoon residents welcomed
Reverend Kuepfer as he led the worship ser-
vice. Thank you also to volunteer pianist
Phillippa Steckle.
Wednesday morning residents played
games, one of which was "Bat the Balloon".
It's amazing how trying to hit the balloons
with the paddles can loosen up stiff arms.
After all that activity residents didn't feel
guilty when in the afternoon they made
chocolate bars and snacked on them at Bak-
ing Club.
Thursday afternoon Queensway Rest
Home residenkd an interesting -outing as
they toured Stege,} Green Houses and en-
joyed the sights,and scents of spring, Easter
Lllies, Azaleas and geraniums. Thank you to
Daisy Baraclough, Velma Robinson, Ber-
nice Ford and Linda Bedard for assisting

STEPPING INTO THE 90s
David and Carol Steckle. In the evening
residents viewed the movie "Mutiny of the
Bounty" as a little preparation for Interna-
tional Day featured Pitcairn Island.
Residents Council met Friday morning
and discussed special events for April. A
highlight will be the trip to Garden Bros.
Circus in London on April 15.
Friday afternoon Pitcairn Island was
featured at International Day. Residents
were fortunate to have many artifacts loan-
ed by Clayton Mathers - maps, carvings,
woven baskets, shell necklaces, stamps and
Pitcairn newspapers.
Residents learned a great deal about this
little known Polynesian Island In the South
Pacific. Following the information session
residents snacked on fresh fruit salad with
kiwi and chilled pineapple juice. It was an
informative afternoon.
Coming Events which residents are an-
ticipating are; March 30 10:30 am Donald
Dearing pays a visit with his baby lambs,
chicks and even a peacock and March 31 at 7
pm "The Brass Bunch" will entertain at the
monthly Birthday Party.

The energetic eight held a reunion on Fri-
day, March 25 at the home of Bev and Doris
Hamilton. Bob and Frances Kinsman were
there from London. Phyllis and Harold Par-
sons and Al and Margaret Hoggarth were
also present. A happy birthday was sung to
Bob Kinsman who was celebrating that day.
'PEOPLE
Dinner guests with the Hoggarth family
on Sunday, March 27 were Al's mother Ruby
Hoggarth from Zurich, Judy Dunn from
London, Annette Losereit from Auburn, and
Dave Hook from Seaforth.
Ruby Alderdice of Meaford was able to
spent a few days in the area this past week
visiting with her son Vern and his wife
Mona.
NEW TRANSFORMER
The thunderstorms that were around in
the area Saturday afternoon of March 26
struck a transformer at the home of Vern
and Mona Alderdice. A new transformer has
to be installed by the hydro company.
KIPPEN UNITED CHURCH
Barbara Cooper presided at the organ and
Tricia Cooper at the piano far the organ
prelude and first hymn at Kippen's United
Church. The choir sang the anthem "Here
Comes Jesus!" Rev. Keays' sermon was fit-
ting for Palm Sunday "The Kingship of
Jesus". Good Friday service at 7:30 p.m.,
Friday, April 1st at Brumfield Church. Holy
communion will be observed, visitors
welcome.

Next the Novices met Brussels who they
defeated handily with a score of 5-3. Scoring
for Hensall were Greg Keys with four and
Brock Weiss helped out with a ssiine�ggl1e
Assisting on the goals were Jamie Campbell
with 2, Greg Keys, Brock Weiss and
Graham Keys.
In a tough final game the Hensall Nmlee
met the league -leading and undefeated
Huron Park Squad. Although they lost 4-1 it
was an exciting and very competitive
match, with a lot of action at both ends of the
ice. Scoring our only goal was Greg Keys,
assisted by Brock and Greg.
The boys all played very well as everyone
gave 100% and made their coaches and fans
very proud. Great goaltending by Eric
Groot and an outstanding 8 point weekmid
by Greg Keys.
The team was awarded with a banner
which will be proudlATOy hMSung in Hensall arena.
The HenselAtoms emerged victorious in
their efforts to become "A" Champs. They
won all three of their games and will travel
to Durham ,,on Easter Monday for a one
game winner -take -all fin in the Huron -
Perth Division. Good luck guys! You earned
it! In their first match they defeated
Goderich White 6-2. Scoring for Hensel!!
were Neil Atchison, Blair Moir, Ray Beld-
ing, Chris Taylor, Shawn Lovell and Mark
Cooper.
In their second outing Hensall squeaked
by Belgrave with a score of 2-1 with goals by
Ryan Kyle and Mark Cooper. Mark Cooper
chalked up an assist.
Game 3 found Hensall in a battle with
Bayfield for the "A" title. Thanks to hard
work and determination they were able to
hold on for a 4-3 win. Hensall goal scorers
were Mark Cooper with 3 outstanding goals
and a single by Blair Moir. Great goalten-
ding by Lance Weiss.
PEE WEES
As we work our way through the
scoreboard we find that the Hensall Pee
Wees too were able to rise to the top of their
division to end up as "A" Champions.
In the first game of their Round Robin
style tournament they met Huron Park and
were able to beat them 5-3. Hensall's scorers
were Dennis Mount from Derek Cam bell,
Mark Deitz, Dave Stephens, Greg Dalrym-
ple and the winning goal by Scott Gould.
In their second contest the Pee Wees held
on to tie Zurich 3-3. An extremely strong ef-
fort by the entire team allowed them to hold
their own against one of their toughest
rivals. Shane Pepper was the first of the
Hensall players to score, assisted by Greg
Dalrymple. Dennis Mount's goal was
assisted by Derek Campbell and Kevin
Mount, while Mark Deitz was unassisted on
the third.
In their third game of the competition
Hensall met Goderich. Hensall's goals were
scored by Mark Deitz with Matt Gardener,
Derek Campbell with Mark Deft, Dennis
Mount with Greg Dalrymple and Matt
Gardener and Matt Gardener with Mike
Hayter and Mike Jones.
In their fourth and final match -up Hensall
met Clinton and solidly defeated them with
a score of 7-2. Putting the puck in the net for
Hensall were Derek Campbell with Dave
Stephens, Brian Gardener, Mark Deitz,
Dave Stephens with three, one assisted by
Dennis Mount, one assisted by Gardener
and Mount and one solo effort. The final goal
in a very rough game was scored by Derek
Campbell with help from Dave Stephens.
Goaltending duties were shared by
Stephens and Gardener. Both contributed
significantly to the offence while not in net.
Extra effort was put forth by Dennis
Mount on face-offs, Greg Dalrymple, Mark
Deitz and Brian Gardener on forechecking
and Brian Gardener who played with an in-
jured foot.
The Hensall Pee Wees will also be travell-
ing to Durham next weekend for the North-
South Huron Perth Title. Good luck!
BANTAMS
The Hensall Bantams played the fourth
game in their Round -Robin Play -Offs on
Sunday. They defeated Howick 4-3 and will
travel to Howick soon for their fifth and final
game. The Bantams finished the regular
season at the top of their division and hope
to be able to defend their title in Regional
Play.
In Sunday's game goals were scored by
Ben Rathwell (2) and Chris Gardener (2).

Potluck supper and awards dinner on Sun-
day. Let's all help all of our "Champ"
celebrate a great season.
SHUFFLEBOARD SCORES
Hensall Shuffleboard scores for Tuesday,
March 22 are as follows: the highest scoring
ladies were Pearl McKnight with 352, 011ie
Essary 347 and Dorothy Brintnell 266. Dave
Kyle was high man with 327, followed by
Bruce Watson 290 and Alf Rags.
Shuffling every Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at
the Hensall arena.
MINOR BALL
Registration is still bbie�nn held for Minor
Ball. You may sign up either of the next two
Saten&y mnrnine from 10 a.m. till noon at
the arena. Coaches are still needed for most
tenure. No coaches - no teams! If you can
help eall-Bob Seaton at 262-3230. Even if you
don't have youngsters playing ball you can
still participate and have some fun at the
same time.
