Cut into profits
Phone earnings down in 1987
Upgrading the Tuckersmith Municipal
Telephone System by installing a host
digital switch in the Bayfield office and
remotes in Hensell, Clinton, and Seaforth
cut into 1987 profits. The balance sheet for
the year ending December 31 showed that
1987 earnings were $107, 045, compared to
$187,135 the previous year. The total cost of
purchasing and installing the new equip-
ment will be about $1,500,000.
Expenses for the year included interest
charges to finance this undertaking. On the
credit side, the equipment under capital
lease added $750,217 to the system's fixed
assets.
"The system is Lound financially," the
auditor informed subscribers to the annual
meeting on March 22 held in the Stanley
comples.
Commission chairman Dave Brock gave
May 14 as the target date to cut Hensall into
the new system. The building to house the
remote switch for Seaforth should be ready
the end of March, and Seaforth will be cut in
by late September to complete the change.
The igital network should be complete by
fall.
Clinton has been on the new system since
November. Tuckersmith telephone
subscribers who had the first three digits of
their numbers changed from 482 to 233 and
found themselves listed after in -town Clin-
ton numbers in last year's London and area
telephone directory will be happy to know
they will be integrated with other Clinton
telephone users in the 1988 directory.
Hensall customers of Tuckersmith
telephone will have their numbers changed
to 263, and Seaforth customers will switch

TUCKERSMITH TELEPHONE COMMISSION - Getting together after the annual

from 527 to 522. Both will be integrated into
the relevantdirectories, rather than being
listed at the end.
Brock said commissioners are still
discussing what rate to charge for a private
line when the system Is fully oerational. A
maximum mileage cost is being considered.
Brock did not give a direct answer to two
subscribers who wanted to know why the
subsriber's list is not published like a voter's
list and available for anyone to see. He
noted that a motion was passed at the 1986
annual meeting to allow anyone who has
been a permanent resident and property
owner in the township for 10 years and has
had continuous telephone service for that
time to apply to become a subscriber.
Brock was acclaimed to a further three-
year term. Two new subscribers, Arnold
Taylor and Robert Cooper, had filed ap-
plications to serve out the two years remain-
ing of the term of Emmerson Coleman, who
had sold his property and resigned from the
commission. Robert Cooper was declared
the winner in an election by secret ballot.
More jobs than students this summer in Huron
The employment situation for students in
the Seaforth area looks very good this sum-
mer, and student employment officials are
forecasting there will be more jobs than
students.
Marg Dupee, supervisor' of the Canada
Employment Centre for Students, has been
at Seaforth District High School lately get-
ting students signed up in the summer
employment program. She says she has to
.get as many students as possible registered
now if the employment centre is going to
meet the demand for jobs during the sum-
mer.
This year the student employment centre
will be organized similar to how it has been
in past years. Offices will be located in
Goderich and Exeter, and every Tuesday
during May and June a representative from
the centre will visit Seaforth. In the morning
the representative will talk to Seaforth
employers, and over lunchtime he will be at
SDHS with job listings. An office will also be
established at the Seaforth library, and the
representative will be there during the
afternoon on Tuesdays.
There are a good mixture of jobs.available
for students, some career oriented and some
casual, with everything from lawyer's assis-
tant or vet's assistant to stone pickers.
Wages vary but they average between five
and seven dollars.
The main focus for now is getting students
registered with the centre so they can be
