The yearly gathering will be held at the Blyth Community Centre on April 6,..with a reception at 6 p.m. followed by a dinner at 7 p.m. During the meeting, a new executive will be elected and delegates to the Ontario Liberal Party's annual meeting in Ottawa on May 6-8 will also be selected. Mr. Scott, who is the after dinner speaker, was first elected to the Legislature on May 2, 1985, and was named Attorney -General by Premier David Peterson on June 26, 1985 when the Liberals defeated the Progressive Conservatives and formed a minority government. Subsequently re-elected in the September 10 election, Mr. Scott was reappointed At- torney General in the Literal lihajbrlty government. Mr. Scott has steered some much needed reformist legislation through the Ontario legislature during the Liberal's term so far, including a new Pay Equity law, Freedom of Information and Right to Privacy Act, and Conflict of Interest Guidelines for Legislature members, to name only a few. All have been heralded as ground -breaking pieces of Legislation. Tickets for the meeting, at $15 each, are available from any executive member or municipal chairperson around the county. OFA wants successful programs, extended Government cash grant programs are successfully helping farmers deal with hard economic times and they should be extend- ed, says the Ontario Federation of Agriculture. Singling out the Ontario Farm Family In- terest Rate Reduction (OFFIRR) program and the Farm Management, Safety and Repairs program, the OFA asked Provin- cial Treasurer Robert Nixon to continue assistance to cash-strapped farmers. "The programs were created to fill specific needs, and these needs still exist," em- phasized OFA president, Brigid Pyke. Agriculture is a capital -intensive industry with a high demand for credit. Debt financ- ing is expensive in real terms and Ontario farmers' traditional source - the federal . Farm Credit Corporation - is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. "Provincial government agencies outside Ontario are now supplying almost 15 per- cent of long-term agricultural credit, and they're doing it at a rate two percentage points below FCC and four points below the banks. Ontario farmers need access to that kind of long term, low cost credit and we're asking this provincial government to get moving," says Mrs. Pyke. While the Federation's main thrust in its meeting with Nixon was for better farm credit and improved stabilization for cash crop farmers, the farm leaders also argued for new economic development programs for rural Ontario. Among the program area OFA recommended were: Rural enterprise development: encouragement of tourism, retirement, and service industries to conn; pliment agriculture as income source. Agro - forestry: the conversion of selected crop land to woodland to alleviate excess produc- tion in some commodities and provide addi- tional on-farm income. Support for small- scale farmers: a peer advisor program which would offer assistance in developing ma pagment and production skills. Grain - derived ethanol: provincial cooperation with the federal government in developing alcohol -based gasoline. This would create a new domestic market for local grains which are now in oversupply. becoming an annual adventrue for the Beaver troupe, and an event which usually preceeds the annual sleepover.
