Midgets advance to semi finals
The Seaforth Midgets have eliminated Six,
Nations and will now advance to the semi-
final round against Lambeth in the Midget
`CC' All Ontario Playoffs.
Tuesday night the Midgets faced Six Na-
tions in Seaforth in the fourth game of the
best of five series. Seaforth had taken the
lead in the series 2-1 in a game in Six Na-
tions that ended in a bench -clearing brawl
that even the spectators were involved in.
Because of the brawl five of the Seaforth
players -some of them key players- were sit-
ting out. Taking the place of the midgets
were several bantam players who were call-
ed on to fill the gaps. Six Nations was in the
same boat, however, as that„ team lost six
players due to suspensions. But they
couldn't call on their bantams because they
also had a game on Tuesday, so Six Nations
had only eight skaters and two goalies at the
game.
Seaforth got on the board. first as Andy
Ball put on a burst of speed and took the
puck down left wing, and slid a backhand
pass out to Blair Beuermann who was
waiting in front of the net. Beuermann made
good on the sgoring opportunity, and Wayne
Regele and Ball picked up assists.
But Six Nations wasted no time in making
up the goal, as they went on the power play.
There was a shot from the point which
Seaforth goaltetfder Trevor Fortune stop-
ped, but the rebound was picked up by a Six
Nations player who tied the game up.
The second period was identical to the
first in terms of goal scoring. Beuermann
was in the right place'at the right time once ,
again as Seaforth went on a power play, and
he took a pass from Ray Murray and beat
the Six Nations goaltender with a low shot to
the stick side. Andy Ball also assisted. But
Six Nations stayed right in the game as they
went on the power play late in the period.
Seaforth failed to ice the puck or even clear
their zone, and eventually gave up one shot
too many. So after the second period the
score was tied at two.
In the third period Six Nations took the
lead for the first time. Seaforth had already
got two goals but both were disallowed -one
because of a penalty, and one because the
net was off its moorings. The third goat for
Six Nations was "just one of those things,"
as Trevor Fortune lost sight of the puck
which was sitting just behind his skates.
When he turned and looked for it he kicked it
in and Six Nations took the lead.
Seaforth tied the game back up as Ray
Murray beat a defenseman at the Six Na-
tions blueline and broke down his wing.
Blair Beuermann got his third of the night
as he picked up the puck, and even while he
was being hauled down by a Six Nations
defender, managed to get the puck past the
Six Nations defender.
Seaforth had good pressure throughout
tete period and the fans, who were packed to
the rafters Tuesday flight, were constantly
on the edge of their seats.
It was Mike 'Dicker' Schoonderwoerd who
put Seaforth in the lead with only 1:13 left in
the game. Seaforth was on a four on three
power play as Schoonderwoerd took a
breakout pass from Terry Gray and started
up the ice. Schoonderwoerd walked around
all three Six Nations players and somehow
hung on to the puck when it looked for sure
like he would lose it, and finished the play by
making it count.
The teams were even again at 0:52, and an
icing call gave Six Nations a face off in the
Seaforth end. The puck went back to a Six
Nations point man off the draw, and a drive
from the blue line found a hole and tied the
score up. Just as the buzzer was going to end
the third period Fortune made a game -
saving grab. The Seaforth netminder was
sprawled on his stomach reaching for a
puck, but a Six Nations' player got to it first
and flipped a shot over Fortune's head
directly at the net. From his prone position
Fortune managed to get his glove up and
saved the game for an overtime period.
It was 6:34 of the overtime period when
Ray Murray, unassisted, gave Seaforth the
win.
The Seaforth Midgets played their first
game against Lambeth in the All Ontario
semi finals last night, but the results were
not available in time for publication.
