Centenaires face another -tough week, lose three more Qames
The Seaforth Centenaires got a firmer
hold on last place in the past week, as they
lost three games.
SEAFORTH 2 - TH AMESFORi)12
The Centenaires were way off their game
when they played Thamesford last Tuesday
night in Seaforth.
In the first period the Centenaires had
their game together and they kept the game
close. Mike Betties, Kevin Melady and Brad
Carter got together on a passing play that
had the Thamesford defence tied in knots
and Betties finished the play by beating the
Thamesford netminder's glovehand. But
Thamesford got two goals of their own to
take the early lead.
The Centenaires, a team that has had a lot
of problems playing a full 60 minutes of
hockey, took one of their characteristic naps
in the second period and the Thamesford of-
fence really went to work on them. When the
period was finally over six pucks had
ALL STARS - Three players from the Seaforth Centenaires have been chosen to play in
the annual Junior 'D' All Star game. Centre Mike Betties, the Centenaire's team cap-
tain, has 22 goals, 21 assists and 76 penalty minutes; right winger Kevin Williamson,
assistant captain, has 10 goals, 9 assists, and 168 penalty minutes; and defenseman
Mike Schoonderwoerd, missing from the photo, has 6 goals, 5 assists, and 35 penalty
minutes. The players were chosen by the Centenaires' team''offlpials and executive.
entered the Centenaire goal. Brad Garter
added a second marker to the Centenaires
side of the Block assisted by Neil Corbett and
Terry Pugh.
The third period was an extension of the
second, with Thamesford getting more shots
but scoring less. They put away another
four, but Seaforth couldn't get any. The final
score hi the game was 12-2 for the visitors.
The shots on goal -tallied by the
u scorekeepers were 12 for the Cents', while
Trevor Fortune faced 62 in the Seaforth
goal.
SEAFORTH 2 -LEY 10
Friday night the Cen nalres were in
Wellesley to take on the Apple Jacks. The
Wellesley club is one of the best in the
league. But although they beat Seaforth by a
large score, the Centenaires let them know
they were in a game.
' The Centenaires again had a reasonable
first period. Wellesley came up with two
goals around the mid -point of the period, but
`Kevin Melady buried one for the
Centenaires unassisted. Wellesley got a
third goal on a power play to extend their
lead to two goals.
In the second„ period the Centenaires
couldn't finish off their plays, or put the
puck in the net when they had good oppor-
tunities. Even one of the linesmen said he
had an idea of where the Wellesley net -
minder, Jeff Gerber, was keeping a lucky
horseshoe. The Wellesley forwards had a
few horseshoes of their own and they scored
another three goals, while the Centenaires
were scoreless in the period.
The local team gave a strong effort in the
third period, but again couldn't make their
good chances count. However, Wellesley
made good on their chances and put four
more away. With 42 seconds left in the game
Brian Dupuis hit Kevin Williamson with a
pass and Williamson drove a slapshot past
Gerber.
The final score was 10-2 but the score
didn't accurately reflect the play of the
Centenaires. If they had put forward that
kind of effort against Thamesford one game
previous they would likely have come away
with two points.
There were two new faces in the lineup for
the Centenaires, one being Brad Bender who
played between the pipes and came up with
32 saves. The other was Steve Hutchins who
;flayed a solid game on the Centenaire
blueline.
In another high scoring game the
Centenaires lost to Thedford 12-2 on Satur-
day night. The Cents' got off to a poor start
with the score being 5-1 after the first
period, and they continually let Thedford
get shots from in close allowing them t_o run
up the score. -
Man for man the Centenaires are as good
as or better than Thedford and many of the
teams they have been losing to. But their
record doesn't show it at 2 wins and 25
losses. There areow only about 10 games
left for them to get some pretty serious
wrinkles ironed out before they have to bat-
tle Mitchell for the fourth place playoff spot.
Centenaire coach Graham Nesbitt has set
some New Year's resolutions for his team.
"We're going to play 60 minutes of hockey
in the same night for starters," he says. Mr.
Nesbitt added the team is going to'cut their
goals against to a maximum of 5 per game,
and "we're going to take aim at Mitchell
because we know we're going to meet them
in the playoffs."
Elite broomball in Clinton
The best broomball in the country will be
seen in Huron County this weekend as teams
from around Ontario compete in the Elite
Broomball Championships.
The' tournament will be held in Clinton
starting Friday, January 15. There will be
two women's teams at the chanittionships,
from Alfred and Kitchener, and'they will
play a best of five series. The nine men's
teams come from centers like Blyth, Ottawa
(the current Canadian champions),
Hamilton, and Sudbury. There will also be a
team from Palmerston in the competition
which is carrying several players from the
Seaforth area. The players come from the C.
H. Express team which folded to combine
with Tenderfresh of Palmerston to become
Maple Leaf Mills. Among the local players
will be Bob Nash, John Cairns, Gary Ben-
nett, and John Devereaux.
A •second•'Elite tournament will be held in
Simcoe during March, and the winners from
both Cimnne nnrf flintnn mill fraval to
Yellowknife, Saskatchewan for the national
finals. The nationals will be held next year
to give the teams time' enough to raise the
money for the trip.
Janet Buchanan, the Regional Convenor
for the Federation of Broomball, says this is
the "best broomball you'll find in the
country."
There will be two games Friday evening,
one at 10, and the other at 11 p.m. The se-
cond game will see the Maple Leaf Mills
club take on the Lambton Outlaws. The tour-
nament will start again at 10 a.m. on Satur-
day and go until 1 a.m. Blyth Universal will
start play on Saturday at 11 a.m. when they
take on Ottawa. Then at 4 p.m. Maple Leaf
Mills Mills (if they win their first game) will
play the winner of Blyth and Ottawa. Many
feel that this game at 4 p.m. Saturday will
be the game which decides the tournament.
If Maple Leaf Mills loses their first contest
they will play at 2 p.m.on Saturday.
