HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1988-01-13, Page 5Seahawks chug to 8-2 win over Arthur Last Friday evening the Seahawks chugg- ed, stumbled and groaned out of the freight yard like an old steam engine that has seen too many miles. With feet planted firmly in the settling ce- ment of the league basement, Arthur buzzed into town to provide the locals with last week's opposition. You would have never guessed the visitors were so far down in the standings that if every team folded they would still be last. Arthur started the match up in fine fashion and controlled play throughout the opening frame. Seaforth did outshoot the enemy but the guest club did a bang up job of holding many of those drives to a harmless level. Dave Schurr banged in a rebound from a Matt Coffey blue line blast and Arthur had jumped quickly into a one to zip lead with just 1:06 gone in the period. Doug Tremble gave his mates a 2-0 cushion at 14:45. His score was a power play effort in which Seaforth's Pete Bennett was cooling his jets after being nabbed for at- tempting to perform surgery on the person of an Arthur skater. Whirling dervish Jim Campbell got the locals back into the picture lust over a minute later when he tallied on a pretty passing play from Doug Anstett and Sean Van Dongen. Leading 2-1, Arthur exploded out of the blocks like a mob of Bees Johnsons to open the second frame. They built up a quick 8-1 lead in shots on net and looked like a club on a mission. Just when Arthur has visions of victory dancing in - their minds, Doug Anstett and Bill Dale combined to ' do something really rude. They teamed up to score a dandy shorthanded marker at 9:21 1of the period and effectively snapped Arthur oat of their revellry and back to reality. Like diterrier after a rat, Dale chased the black sc into the enemy zone, slipped a neat pass to Anstett who promptly plunked the puck into the gaping net. Arthur never recovered from that gate- crashing and Seaforth began to pound on them unmercifully. 'rhe Seahawks' attack suddenly roared Into high gear and they swarmed all over their foe's portion of the ice leaving the Arthur lads staggering and reeling like a boxer who had taken one too many to the ole' noggin. Dale performed his magic again at 12:38 of the stanza when he ripped a power play shot in to give the Seahawks a 3-2 lead. That goal proved to be the winner. The home side machine gunned 22 drives at a beleaguered Arthur net minder while his less than sup- porting cast managed 11 shots on Derek Cooper. Most of those were of a tired and feeble nature. Things only got worse for Arthur in the final 20 minutes. They were sucked into the vortex of an impressive Seaforth attack and just couldn't climb out. The Seahawks bullied their opponents into submission with a five goal flurry. - and a couple of those were on the truly pretty side. Jim Campbell started the onslaught when he took a long, beautiful, pass from Doug Anstett, zipped in alone and blazed a rocket over the left shoulder of a helpless Arthur goalie. Not to be outdone by Campbell's Savar- dian escapades, Paul McClure smarms goes end to end to give the home chaps a b' bulge at 4:55 of the period. Sean Van Dongen, Campbell his third, and Rob Core all added scores later to add to the ceremonial bath. The Hawks laced 18 drives on net while Arthur scavenged for 11 shots -at puckstop- per Cooper.
