BY BO, SAMS R. BROADFOOT
On June 30, a large number of Broadfoot
descendants, from all over Canada and the
United States, will be converging on
Seaforth, to celebrate the 150th Anniversary
of the Broadfoot settlement in Huron -County.
It will be a time when the present
generation of Broadfoots will remember and
honor Sarah „Broadfoot, widow of James
Broadfoot, who came with her three sons
(Alexander, James, and John) and two
daughters, (Sarah m;(1 Agnes) from Scotland,
to settle in the Huron Tract in Tuckersmith
Township, which was then being opened up
for settlement.
The Clan Broadfoot is a very old Scottish -
English border family, whose very history is
inter -woven into the very fabric of Scottish
life and history. The name Broadfoot is an
Anglicized corruption Of the Scottish sur-
name - "Bradfute" or "Bradfot". Although
the meaning of the name has been lost to
time, it is generally accepted as meaning "at
the bend or foot of the river".
Marion Bradfute, the daughter of Sir Hugo
de eradfute, the Earl of Lamington, was
supposed to have married . Sir William
Wallace (1270-1305), the great liberator of
Scotland. The Broadfoot name acquired
prominence in the Scottish border area, more
particularly in the counties of Wigtownshire
and Dumfriesshire.
By the early 1800's, a wave of Scottish
immigrants brought many of the Lowland
Scots to Canada, and the Huron Tract.
Scotland Could no longer support the rapidly
growing population, and the advertisements
from Canada circulatingin '4cou_an(fgave the
promise of inexpensive land', This gatie hope;
to many of the Scottish %tinges, that they tee
might have ownership of their own land:
By May 1833, Alexander Broadfoot, along
with other Scottish families, such as the
Carnochans, MacMillans, McCartneys,
bicksons, and others, made their way across
the Atlantic Ocean, through the state, of New
York, and finally arrived in Huron Connty.
They were relatively poor people*liringing
with them their, few belongings arid a
determination to survive in a relatively
unknown land. Yet, they were ill-preparedfor
life in a forested wilderness.
Still, they persevered in order to find a
better way of life. They purchased land from
the Canada company, and thus began the
arduous task of clearing the land.
Alexander undoubtedly wrote 'home to
Scotland and told his brothers John and
James about the great opportunities that
were available to them in the new land. But it
would not be until 1835 that their mother,
Sarah along with John and James, left their
native land of Scotland to come to Huron
County to build a new way of life.
The Broadfoot family originally lived on a
large estate called' "South Mains", just
outside Sanquhar, in Dumfriesshire, Scot-
land. About 1809, the family moved to
Coylton, Ayrshire and it was in this area of
Scotland that the ' Broadfoots met the
Carnochans, the McCartneys and other
families who eventually came to the Huron
Tract,
Agnes Broadfoot met and married James

Martin; and Sarah met and Inartie0 Yobert
McCartney. James, the father, died in
Scotland and Sarah, at the good age of 74
years came to Canada.
'ft
undoubtedly was difficult for Sarah and
thefamily to give up theiiroots in Scotland, to
write so far; but their faith in the future gave
them the strength to go forward.
After the five members of the BrOadfoot
family settled in Huron County, they married
and most of theta raised large families, In due
course, these children grey(' to adolthood* and
found partners in the neighboring fandlies,
which they married.
• Thus, the Broadfoot families became
intermingled with many qf the local families -
the Hoidens, Diclisons, Scotts, McTavish'a,
• and the Etheringtons, to name only a few.
These Broadfoot pioneers were all farmers
in Tuckersmith Township. In due course, one
of the families moved to Morris Township and
began to carve out a life in that area.
By the 1870's, with the opening ofthe West
and the promise of abundant and cheap land,
many families from Huron County decided to
join the wave of emigrants going West.
Included were certain members of the
Broadfoot family; some of whom went to take
up residence in Kansas and others who went
to the west of Manitoba. Thus, many of the
present Broadfoot families in the West, are
the descendants of those pioneers who went
West in the 1870's. •
Certain members of the Broadfoot family
have left their marks on the life of.
Tuckersmith Township, and the town of
Seaforth. Broadfoots have played an integral

Today, there.are over 500 descendants of
that first Broadfoot family - Sarah and her five
children - itt aft parts of Canada and the
•United States. The last gathering of Clan
• Brnadfoot took 'place in July, of 1934, when
over op people gathered at the "Mains
Farm" htheme of Alexander and James at
that time.
As the Broadfoot descendants once again
gather in Seaforth, they will remember and
honor those first pioneers who, with courage,
ingenuity, and determination, came to
Canada and gave us a legacy of which we can
be very proud.
Garrison's Garage good way to start Blyth season
BY PATRICIA RIMMER •
Ted Johns. playwright of the opening play
of the 10th season of the Blyth Summer
Festival produced another winner. Gar-
rison's Garageivas an excellent comedy from
start to finish. But the only flaw was the
abrupt ending which made the play incom-
plete. Perhaps the audience just -didn't want
the play full of antics and wit to come to an
end.
The audience was kept laughing through
the play. The plat, characters and, setting
maintained the atmosphere of a small.
gossipy village in Southern Ontario, some-
thing a majority of the audience was familiar
with.
Garrison's Garage, portrays a small town
image. The setting added to the performance
as it gave ita rugged. busy athiosphere. In
setting the stage, director Katherine Komar
included every , detail of -a small town
garage --right down to the dirty sink, soiled
rags and bent license plates. The setting was
important as the entire play was set in' a
garage, with only a few props being added,
between acts.
• The five characters in Garrison's Garage
play an equal role in the play. Ft ank, a
friendly, talkative, but slow mechanic played
by Robert King,is working on the engine of a

and forth waiting for the -clumsy mechanic to
finish working op his car. Much ofthe first act
is centered around the verbal conflicts that
