LOOK BOTH WAYS—Marianne Van den
Hengel and Veronica Grobbink learned from
Constable John Marshall of the Goderich
OPP what precautions to take when getting
off the school bus. The new kindergarten
class at St. James Separate School in
Seaforth learned about bus safety last week.

Students find fossils
The two/grade four lasses of Seaforth
Public School went to Rock Glen. One of them
is doing a unit on fossils.
Rock Glen is popular for fossils. On the way
down to Rock Gien the classes had an activity
book to work on.
We had six groups in our class. The
leaders, Mrs. Beuttenmiller, Mrs. Murray
and Mrs. Kling, Shelly Driscoll and our
teacher Mrs. Van den Akker went with us.
We went for a tour, then had lunch then our
groups went offto find fossils. The trails were
very muddy.
We left about 2 p.m. and arrived home at
3:20 p.m.. right in time. •
That's the grade 4V and 4C's trip to Rock
Glen. Here are sante-tomments from my

Froin the minute a child enters the world he
is faced with different obstacles, some major
and others are very minor in comparison. At
that very young age the child learns to handle
life's :rises like many political leaders and
heroes have done so many times in the past
and are still doing today....he gets even. It's a
simple process. If someone does you wrong,
the logical thing to do is to hold a grudge until
someday in some way you can get even, with
that person. or so we think.
Think back to the time when you were a
small baby held softly in your mother's arms.
Oh, life was just dandy back then. You didn't
even have to blow your own nose when you
were a little tyke, it was all done for you.
However, how, on earth were you to try and
explain to your parents that you had an itch on
your back or that the reason that you cried at
night was not because you were overtired but
instead simply because you needed a hug.
Well, this is where it all begins.
When Mommy accidentally pricks you with
a diaper pin or puts you be to bed when she
needs you to sleep instead of when you need
to sleep you begin to plot this minor revenge.
Then next time she puts you on the changing
table she gets just what she deserves! Or the
time that one of her old college buddies drops
by to see this darling little1 angel, you spit up
all over her dress just to make Mommy proud.
Yes, it does happen, time and time again.
They think that it is just an accident when
you put your hand through a lemon meringue
pie or knock Mommy's prized heirloom vase
S
off, of the coffee table. "Kids will be kids,"
they say.
As a toddler you get even with parents
simply by keeping. them running all the
house after you night after night after night.
You get into the kitchen' cupboards dragging
out pots and pans and any other household
item that you can get your hands. on.
Pre-schoolers tend to be moreinnovative
about their schemes of revenge. They like to
cause their motherspanic by playing
such pranks such as "A minute ago you saw a
marble in my mouth and now it is gone! or
"I wonder if I can actually slide down this
clothes shute?" ft is not only parents that
these little wonders get even with. They often
tend to disrupt the whole neighborhood with
their pranks. Things such as spraying an
unsuspecting sunbather with the garden hose
or telling the whole street what you had for
dinner last night, are ,eomrnon. Such a treat
these children are, but yet so innocent too..
Once into kindergarten they start learning
things from their friends so they no longer
depend totally on their own genius little
minds to think up ways to get even. These
children work together by telling their
mothers "BM Mrs. so-and-so said that Bobby
could..." or "1'11 be the only one_ who isn't
allowed to go." by laying such guilt trips on
their parents, these angels get their own way
more times than once. Once at the school age
children are able to reason more clearly so
they can figure out what would happen if they
tattled on their sister or brother. What a great
way to get even.

Drainage pay's off
in watertablecontrol
Good drainage lowers the water table, while the soil
retains ample moisture for healthy plant growth. Excess
water is removed, leaving only aerated capillary water for
crops.

Another. way to get even. With a sibling who
has done an injustice to you, or so you think,
is to eat the last cookie on the plate or finish
up his or her favorite flavor of ice cream. It
happens all the time. Then there is the old
trick of turning on the hot water in the kitchen
while a sister or brother is taking a shower(a
rather cold one) in the bathroom. Borrowing
clothes is another pastime argument, then
the wardrobe is cut off.
One of my favorite lines when 1 was a kid
was to threaten my sister and/or brother that
I wouldn't buy them a Christmas present- if
they didn't do things my way. Big loss! The
most expensive presents I ever bought them
totalled $2 at the most! But it was a great way
to win a battle.
Kids are not tire only ones who insist on
getting even. They have to learn it from
someone and adults are pros. They have had
lots of experience! If parents are not happy
with little Johnny's behavior, they get even
by sending him to bed an hour earlier. than
usual: Not that it matters, he can't tell time
anyway. But it makes them feel better. After
having a little spat with her husband, a
woman may make his most -hated dish for
dinner. thatnight or purposely' leave the
er
elastic of his pyjama bottoms still wet when
doing the laundry.
Even teachers get even with students at
this time of year. After a couple of weeks of
slacking off they really pile on the work at the
end of the school year and demand that you
study on a nice warm sunny weekend. The list
goes on and on. The idea is that if you act in
the expected manner most of the time, most
people will have no reason to get even with
you.
It works both ways. if you do a favor for
someone or go out of your way to be nice,
maybe some day when you are in trouble and
need a helping hand you will have that favor
returned. Unfortunately, too many people
hold grudges instead of remembering the
good things that others do for them.
