visitors from Alberta

Mr,:•and Mrs. Harold Rock received word
on Sunday of the sudden death from a heart
attack of their cousin Annie Scheerschmidt of
Stettler Alta. She was in her 82nd year and
leaves to mourn her family, and one sister
Lizzie Bauer of Stettler Alta., and many
nieces and nephews in Ontario.
She was a daughter of the late John Rock
and Clara Leonhardt former residents of
Ontario. Our sympathy is -.extended to the
family and relatives of the deceased. Funeral
arrangements were incomplete.
Allan and Sharon Schenk and children
Tony and Tracey of Erdrie, Alberta, visited
with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold
Rock and Mr. and Mrs. Don Schenk and
attended the"wedding of Mark Schenk and
Donna Young on Friday. Congratulations are
extended to the newlyweds.
Frieda Bennewies and Minnie Leonhardt
were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin
Scheflenberger of Mitchell last Sunday, June
3.
Congratulations from the community are
extended to Terry and Maryanne Elligsen of
Brodhagen on the arrival of their first born, a
son born on Wednesday, June 6 in the
Stratford General Hospital.
Clara and Edith Meyer of Kitchener spent
a few days at the home of their sister Minnie
Leonhardt and also visited their aunt, Frieda
Bennewies on Friday evening.
MacGuigan slips into Perth
With less than a week to go before the
Liberal leadership convention, leadership
hopeful Mark MacGuigan stopped off in the
Perth riding for a couple of hours on June 9.
About 50 of the riding's party faithful
came to talk with the man who has been
Perth's regional minister for the past four
years. ,
The current minister of justice repeated
words he has said across the country, saying
if he is elected prime minister. he would like
to see the small bilsiness sector encouraged
to create More jobs.
Mr. MacGuigan said be would like to see
the financial strength of Canada built up by
restraining the deficit. •
He sees Canada as having a future in the
international scene, particularity in bringing
about peace.
Mr. MacGuigan answered one question on
tourism. saying he would "keep giving

meeting of the Women's Missionary Society
of Cromarty Presbyterian Church at the
home of Lila McKaig.
She began with a poem and Muriel Scott
led the worship service. Assisting her by
reading scripture passages were Agnes
Lamond. Lillian Douglas. Lila McKaig,
Dorothy Miller and Edna Stoneman.

Mr. MacGuigan was the third leadership
candidate to visit Perth. He was preceeded
by the two front-runners in the campaign,
John 1 irner and Jean Chretien.
Wilfred Krauskopf, Perth Liberal Riding
Association president, and Bob McTavish,
the last Liberal candidate for Perth, have
said they would supportMacGuigan on the
ftisf-balllot This, the two' men have' said; is
out ofrecognition for Mr. MacGuigah's work
in the riding as regional cabinet minister.
Other Perth delegates are either uncom-
mitted or lean to other leadership contend-
ers.
Mr. MacGuigan said he feels good going
into the last week of the leadership
campaign and places himself third, behind
Mr. Turner and Mr. Chretien.
Afriqari youth
roll call. Dorothy Miller's topic was on
busy-ness.
Agnes Lamond reported 22 cards sent and
five visits made to the sick and shut-ins.
The study book session in charge of Lillian
Douglas, began with a poem, followed by a
word search puzzle of products of Africa.
Two case studies of African youth were read
and discussed, and interesting pictures of
African youth were displayed.

Kerslake was in charge of the May meeting
of the Staffa Women's Institute on Wednes-
day evening, May. 30 in the Township hall.
4-H members, mothers and leaders were.
special guests along with the guest speaker,
Mrs. Durst, Seaforth, who gave an informa.
tive talk and demonstration on "Making and
Caring for your Garden".
Mrs. Durst had information booklets,
plants and seeds for everyone.
The new \president, Mrs. Dalton Smale,
presided. Mrs. Robert McCaughey accom-
panied on the piano.
The three 4-H Homemaking clubs spon-
sored by the Staffa WI set up displays of
their quilted articles which they had made in
the recent 4-H quilting club. Staffa (11 club,
led by Mrs. Spencer Jeffery and Mrs. Craig
Kerslake had their display commented on by
Renee Drost. Staffa /i2 club led by Mrs.
Elgin Dearing and Mrs. John Renne was
commented on by Mrs. Dearing. Staffa #3
club led by Mrs. Dalton Smale and Mrs. Ken
Hunsberger with the commentary given by
Lee Ann Lannin.
Janice Vivian gave a demonstration and
handed out instructions on string quilting.
Susan Harburn and Lisa Renne were
presented with a Perth County Plate for
completing 12, 4-H Homemaking projects
and receiving their provincial honors. Linda
Renne received a spoon rack for completion
of 18 clubs and receiving her advanced
about gardening
honors. A special ;recognmon was mane to
Mrs. Spencer Jeffery who has been a 4=H
Homemaking club leader for 15 years.
Thank you notes and a letter were read by
the Secretary, Mrs. Wm. Mahon.
Mrs.. Lloyd Miller gave a report on the
recent district annual held in Mitchell United
Church. Some upcoming events she reported
are the Perth South District bus trip to the
Erland Lee Home and the Ontario Agricul-
tural Museum at Milton. The curators
workshop will be hosted by Middlesex at
Coldstream on Aug. 14. The Perth County
W.I. rally in Stratford on Oct. 11 and the
London Area. Convention in St. Marys Nov.

Moose Lodge, Kitchener..Lointng over 100
guests were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Burns, Staffa
and Mr. and Mrs. Lets Pare of Smithfield,
brothers of Harry's, as well as friends from
Thunder Bay, Oshawa, Toronto, St. Cather
ines, . London, Windsor and the Kitchener
area.
Harry started his automotive career in
1944 with the late Harold Pethick, Dublin,
'and received his automotive mechanic's
license in 1948. He married Lorene Harburn
of this area in 1946 and they have two sons.

plants which she distributed..; to everyone
present. Lunch was served by Mrs.
Kerslake, Mrs. Harburn and Mrs. Temple-

PERSONAL
Mr. and Mrs. John. Templeman enjoyed a
bus ._trip with Perth County Holstein
members to Quebec where they visited
farms in the St. Hyacinth and Drummond-
ville areas.
A former local resident retires from Bell
Canada wiTh 34 years service. Harry Burns
formerly of Staffa, son of the late Mr. and
Mrs. Dan Burns, was honored by his fellow

this week. Their family held a dinner in their
honor at the L.O.B.A. Hall with the L.O.B.A.
members catering.

anniversary recently. Their family held a
dinner in their honor at the Legion, catered to
by the Legion ladies. Open House and a
dance followed.
Funeral services were held for Irene Parker
of Sebringville, formerly of the Staffa
community with Rev. Anderson of Hibbert
United Church officiating assisted by Rev.
Daynards of Staffa. Interment in Staffa
Cemetery.
