However, the committee is hoping for many more submissions from famines, farms, Industries, service clubs, Action Ads schools and hospitals. (Photo by Buchanan) Seeding, frostmold White bean production review PHONE DIRECT 527-0240 BY PAT LYNCH Soli & Crops Specialist The white bean crop has been the highest profit per acre crop for Perth and Huron county farmers. It is also the crop with the most risk. Following is a review of some of the commonly asked production questions. Seeding date traditionally for the main white bean area has been the week of June 10. However, with some of the newer, higher yielding varieties the date is being pushed up to the last few days in May and the first week of June. Many farmers are concerned about the possibility of a frost around the full moon time (June 13). We share your concern, but would rather gamble with an early frost and plant early than take a chance with a possible early frost in Sept. There are three new varieties for 1984. The earliest of these is Northland. It is earlier and higher yielding than Seafarer: - The most exciting new variety is Midland. It is a bit later than Seafarer, but earlier than Kentwood. ' Again, it has . significantly outyielded Seafarer in the government trials. The last variety is called Wesland. It is a bit later than Kentwood. The other variety that is new is Ex Rico. It has good tolerance to white mold. It is a bit later than Kentwood, so not everyone can grow it. However, if you have 2800 Heat Units or more and if you are concerned about white mold, you should try it. - Ex Rico will still get white mold` in severe disease conditions. But it seems to withstand mold better and yield better than the other varieties under extreme disease conditions. In a trial conducted by Dr. Mike Tu of C.D.A. Harrow, these two varieties were infected with white mold. Fleetwood yielded 1329 kg./ha. and had 99.6% of the plants infected with mold. Ex Rico had a yield of 2746 kg./ha. But, you should be looking at seeds/foot of row rather than lbs./acre. Normally in wide rows you should drop about 4 to 5 seed per foot of row. Hopefully this will give 3 to 4 plants/foot of row. if you are plenting white beans in narrow rows - 7" - you should aim for a population of about 125,000-150,000. This means you should have about 2 seeds/foot of row. Seeding depth can affect evenness of emergence and also evenness at harvest. I know some of you like to plant shallow if you have good moisture at a shallow depth. If you are using Patoran or A e in, the seed must be planted 13/4" deep.. his depth is needed to keep the herbicide away from the bean roots. If the' beans ar planted too shallow and it rains after plan ing, the rain, can wash the herbicide down to the bean roots. This depth is especially important if you are planting in narrow rows. If you can't get the seed planted 13/4", then you should use Basagran as your broadleaf herbicide rather than Patoran or Afesin. All, things considered two herbicides should be used including an annual grass herbicide that must be incorporated - either Lasso, Dual, Treflan or Eptam and the other a broadleaf herbicide, Patoran or Afesin, that is used after planting. Hoegrass postemergent can also be used for annual grasses, or Basagran for broadleaf weeds. Many farmers would like to tank mix two herbicides and make a once-over pass similar to soys. However, we have no once-over tank mix except those tank mixes where Amiben is used. (If you use a tank mix with Amiben you won't control mustards). Jim O'Toole from Centralia College, who does research with white bean herbicides, says you can get up to a 40 per cent yield reduction by not incorporating Lasso, Dual. Incorporation of these two herbicides makes them safer for white beans. This year we have had numerous enquiries about using an insecticide at planting. The product Thimet was registered many years ago to control leaf hopper and Mexican bean beetle. The problem with this product is it breaks down and is not available when we get our heaviest infestations of leaf hoppers - mid to late July. Because there is virtually no insecti- cide being moved into the plant in mid-July, we no longer recommend it. If either of these insects become a problem in your field, you should use a foliar insecticide. Sebringville man will be president of Perth F of A. A Sebringville area man will head up the Perth County Federation of Agriculture at _least until November of this year. A press release issued on June 1, states the county federation has "agreed to accept" Ron Christie's resignation as president of the federation. Current first vice-president Dave Smith of R.R.1, Sebringville has agreed to complete Mr. Christie's term. "Mr. Christie felt his own personal views conflicted with those of the Federation of Agriculture," states the press release. Mr. Christie's resignation was brought on in part by the approval of a Bruce County resolution passed at the April OFA meeting. The resolution called for the resignations of minister of agriculture Dennis Timbrell, provincial treasurer Larry Grossman and the deputy minister of agriculture Bill Doyle if improvements are not made in the farming economy. STYLE of R.R.2, Atwood initially submitted, his resignation at the same meeting as did Mr. Christie. He said he would reconsider and a federation spokesman said Mr. Verktey has agreed to stay on as Elma Township's director. The Perth Federation acknowledges that "a lot of controversy" has been raised about the resolution. "To date, no local ISM member has written to the Perth County Federation of Agriculture stating strong feelings pro or con," states the release. "Without good communications between local directors and members it is hard to voice an accurate feeling of Perth County farmers. Perth County Federation of Agriculture directors' meetings are open to the public and we encourage local interest."
