ON THE
GREENS
III CAROLANNE DWG
If a martian landed in the middle of a golf
course on a Sunday afternoon I wonder if he
would'ever bother to come back to earth, or,
just 'write us off as some primitive
club -wielding society with psychptic tenden-
cies, After all he would never know that it's
just a game we're all playing. That little
green man would see hundreds of people in
colorful garb, split into small groups,
chasing little round objects through' a field
with long clubs. Warfare? Agriculture?
Religious ceremonies? Business? Would he
know that those red-faced, frustrated, foot
stamping, humans are really out on the golf
course to have fun?
Golf in spite of its infuriating aspects is
really just a game. It's a pastime for those
who like to get out into the sunshine and
fresh air and need a legitimate excuse other
than gardening or painting the porch. Golf is
many things to many people. Golf can he
heartbreakingly cruel . one minute and
hilariously funny the next.
If yop take it too seriously golf can make
you grey, but if you don't take it seriously
enough you will never know the elation or
pure joy of hitting the perfect shot, or
shooting your gest game ever, You see, golf
is an individual game that can be whatever
you want it to be. You set your own goals and
go out and try to beat yourself.
There's no sense in trying to beat the
course because the golf course never loses
no matter what you shoot. Winning over an
opponent is fun too, but it's no fun at all if he
plays lousy. However if he plays well and
you play even better, well that's triumph)
There's no referee out there blowing a
whistle every time you bend one of the rules
or make a mistake. You are on your own, and
depending on whether you play alone all the
time or with the same friends every day, you
may develop your own modified version of
the game, just like kids on the river playing

shinny and declaring no slapshots and no
raising,.
The object of the game is to hit the ball
with a club from the tee into the hole in the
least number of Strokes. Jt sounds so simple
and when watching the pros play it looks so
simple. However, when I see someone make
something look as easy as pie I'm often
leery.
Remember the fellows who used to travel
from fa1J fair to fall fair with their magic
vegetable preparers? "It slices. It dices. It
shreds, It spreads." Spreads? Sure -all over
the kitchen whenever I tried to use it. Let's
face it the guy was a professional vegetable
preparer (not nearly as glamorous as a pro
golfer) and he was good at his job, After all if
you diced carrots eight hours a day, five days
a week, you'd be good too. For the average
cook, though, those vegetable preparers
were the closest thing to a professional
manicure some of us ever got.
The same is true for the average golfer.
Getting the ball from the tee into the hole in
the least number of shots is a major
accomplishment, The worst of it is that it's
all relative. Once you've,had your best game
ever, nothing else will do, You have to keep
having those games to give you that great
eeling. Golf is cruel,
ver the years playing the game has
Jte me easier in some ways and more
difficult in others. Scientific advancements
in equipment, swing analysis, and improved
course layouts and conditioning have made
the game easier to a certain extent.
Increased intervention with the game has
also resulted in the laying down of governing
rules to give a constancy to a game played all
over the world,
Rules are made and changed and
rechanged over the years to improve the
game and ensure that all golfers are
essentially playing the same game especially
in competition, or when trying to establish
an accurate handicap for playing in future
competitions, The present rule book is now a
100 pages long, a far cry from the basic idea
of playing the ball from the tee into the hole
and counting the shots it took. ,
The rules have )leen changed this year and
it is the first major change since 1951.

Learning the new rules will take some time
and I'm sure we will all snake a few mistakes
along the way. Rule books are availfsble and
the Ontario Golf News has the revised rules
listed in this month's edition. Just as hockey
is more fun when we know what off -side is,
golf is more fun when we know the basic
rules of the game,
On Monday June 11 following the ladies'
chipping clinic which begins at 8 p.m., there
will be a rules briefing in the clubhouse for
men, women and juniors who are interested.•
'This its especially important for any golfers
planning to attend any competitive events
during the summer, but It is also an
informations night for any golfers interest-
ed. Tuesday, June 12 after school is the
Junior Optimist Tournament.
Winners in last week's men's night were
Ken Cardno, Cam Doig, Phih Hoggarth, and
Bob Gridzak. There are still seats on the bus
to the Canadian Open on June 26 so juniors
are invited to sign up now.
