Losing a pet is surely not an easy important service in a blind person's life; he thing to do. .. .•will allow them to become mobile. How would you react however, if god were Dr. Thompson is a member of the Seaforth Lions club and heard about the puppies while at a convention in' Port Elgin. The Guide Dog School has been a project of Lionism for 60 years. These schools work with blind and visually impaired people who, can be independently mobile with the help of a trained dog. Lions have supported. a trained to -lead the blind given a dog for just a year to take care of and to train from an 11 -week-old puppy to full-grown dog. At the end of that year the dog would leave your home and go onto a new life and new home where he would provide a very useful service. Dr. Bill Thompson and his family have such a dog. Leader Dog ‘School in Michigan and there are five other places in the D.S. where there are guide .dog schools • but the Lions Club decided that there was a need for a school in Canada.• A school has been purchased from the town of Oakville at the cost of S226,000. A layout for the renovations and development of -'the facility has• been ,developed and architects' drawings have been -prepared. The horhe of the Lions Foundation of Canada and Canine Vision Canada is on the way; the goal for the opening is Nov. 1, 1984. Arrangements have been made with the Breeders Association of Canada and a program fs being set up for a supply of paps some of which have already been supplied to the Canine Vision Canada puppy program. There are now four puppies in homes of Lions in, District A9 (which includes the Seaforth ' club). 'One of these puppies is Cody. To qualify to have a puppy starwith you for a year there must be a person with the pup at most times and there must be an opportunity to walk the dog on streets that are near heavy traffic, exposing the dog to cars and crowds. When walking, the dogs are not to be told to "heel" as most people teach, but are expected to lead. The pups are not to be given table scraps. The basic training that the Thompson family does for Cody is to give him some tender loving care, get him used to being handledand get him used to sleeping in a cage so that when he goes to the school he will be used to a kennel. Dr. Thompson says that Cody didn't like the cage at first and whined and barked a lot at night when he was put there to sleep but how he'll go there himself. Cody eats dry puppy food and receives no people food of 'any type. Surprisingly enough, the people at Canine Vision Canada prefer it if the family training the dog has children in it. If there are children in the family, the puppies will get lots of attention (Please turn to pag&A9) SUNDAY SCHOOL students of St. Thomas Anglican Church planted flowers as part of Flower Sunday. The event was held In conjunction of the 129th anniversary of the church. (Hook photo) Summer sc of offered again The Huron County Board of Education is offering a full Summer School Program at Central Huron Secondary School again this year. Courses are offered to both elementary and secondary school students in Math, English, Science, History, and Computer Studies. This year "Summer School 84" is offering two new credit courses at the secondary level - Keyboarding (Typing 141), and Computer Studies (Data 241), both of which will earn a .half credit towards a student's graduation diploma. English as a second language and driver education are also offered. For a four week period beginning July 2, summer school students receive intensive, personal instruction in one subject for three hours each day. Since class sizes are usually small, and since only one subject is being studied, students have an excellent oppor- tunity to improve their understanding of a subject so that the following year's work will be easier. Bus transportation has been arranged to Collect students from the major areas of the county. This arrangement will be improved once school actually starts and we know who is coming. ' In the past, both staff and students have found summer school to be a rewarding experience - not only for the improvement in regular school work, but also for the experience of summer school itself. Small classes, a new environment, good weather, a relaxed atmosphere all tend to make summer school enjoyable. A complete list of courses offered is available from all school principals and guidance counsellors. Expositor Action Ads Ph. 527-0240 Friendly Courtesy Carry Out Service STORE HOURS: Mon., Wad.
