Two members attend D-Diy anniversary.
VtxLI
Two, weeks ago our sick and visiting
chairman Henry Ziler invited a bus load of
veterans from Westminster Hospital, to the
branch. From all reports that I've heard, a
good time was enjoyed by all ,and thank -
you notes have been received by our
secretary expressing their gratitude. These
veterans are permanent residents of West-
minster Hospital and these visits are very
much looked forward to by the veterans.
This coming Friday night is the Honors and
Awards night and will be under the
chairmanship of Dick Whiteley. An initiation
ceremony will also be held for new members
who have not had the privilege of being
initiated to the membership. Please try to
attend. The price is right at S5 each. There is
also a smorgasbord supper to be served by
our Ladies' Auxiliary at 7 p.m. before the
business, part of the meeting and dancing.
As most of our readers are aware today,
June 6 is the 40th anniversary of D -Day, the
'day that has been called the Longest Day"
and which marked the beginning of the
second front in Europe. The T.V. and
newspapers have given ample coverage of
the events of that day such as the untold acts
of courage and heroism and of the comrades
who perished in the race over the open
beaches to some sort o-gover. The cemeteries
in Normandy attest to the many' lives that
were lost on this day.
Two of our members from the branch,
,.George. Case and his *Ile Jane are now in
Europe attending some of the memorial
services being held this week in Normandy
and tracing: the Canadian forces march
liberating Belgium and Holland. Many
Canadians have made these trips in recent
years and as the veterans now approach
retirement many more will want to return tb
the scenes of the battlefields where so many
gave their lives that we might live in a free
world.
They grow not old as we that are left grow
old, age shall not weary them nor the years
condemn. At the going down of the sun and in
the morning we will remember them.
