Farm economy isn't getting better: OFA
Unless there is' immediate provincial
assistance for beef, pork and lamb producers,,
Ontario Treasurer Larry Grossman • and
OMAF Minister Dennis Timbrell should
resign, the board of directors of the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture (OFA) decided.
"Much has been reported about the
healthy recovery of the general economy.
Unfortunately, the farm economy isn't
getting better," OFA president Harry
Pelissero said.
The board decision is a signal of the
tremendous frustration in the farming
community. "We've been hit with delay after
delay in introducing stabilization programs.
And now we're hit with higher interest rates
that no farmer can afford, he said.
The board said support payments for red
meat producers should be Increased to match

Mrs. Janisa Coultes. Mrs, Earl Anderson

Mrs. Lawrence Taylor gave the call to
worship followed by a hymn. MrS. Olive
Campbell readscripture and Mrs. Taylor
gave the meditation and prayer. The study
was "Life for the Good People" and the
chapter from Jesus Means Life was read:-
Preliminary
ead:Preliminary plans were discussed for the
"Over 80" special meeting in August,
Mrs. Campbell conducted a contest.
GOALIES GET AWARD
Steve Coultes and Jeff McGavin were
named co -winners of the Don. Higgins
Memorial Goaltenders Award at the Brussels
Minor Hockey Banquet held recently. Steve

the Midgets this season.
PEOPLE WE KNOW
Marcy Bieman of Wingham spent Friday
and Saturday with her grandmother Mrs.
Agnes Bieman. Mr, and Mrs. Neil Bieman
and Miranda of Wingham visited on Saturday
with Mrs. Bieman and Marcy returned home
payments in other provinces: The board also
said the payments should be retroactive to
1981.
In a near unanimous vote, the 125 -member
board also demanded the introduction of a
"meaningful" stabilization plan by the
provincial government within 30 days. If the
plan is not introduced in that period, the
board called for the resignation of Mr.
Grossman, Mr. Timbrell and William Doyle,
an assistant deputy minister of the ministry of
agriculture and food.
"Governments have spent billions of
dollars in the past few years bailing out big
business, Mr. Pelissero said. "At the same
tim farmers have been told that programs
to help agriculture are on the way."
"We can't waif any longer. Today's
farmers don't have the financing optiops
open to the farmers of 10 years ago."
One out of seven Ontario farmers cannot
meet their loan payments to the Farm Credit
Corporation (FCC), the board was told. To
make matters worse, the FCC recently
increased its interest rates on loans to a
minimum of 14 percent.
Although the FCC is a federal agency, the
OFA board feels that assistance for agricul-
ture must come from both the federal and
provincial governments.
"The sense of frustration by the farm
community in general has never been
higher," said Mr. Pelissero. "This frustra-
tion comes both from concerns over low
commodity prices and staggering debt
costs."

Off to the north they will,go
To a land filled with ice and snow
In Inuvik, it will be mighty cold
You have to snuggle to keep warm, so I'm told
And so dear Karen and Woz, you have our
best wishes,
As we wave "goodbye" with hugs and kisses.
Good luck.
Karen thanked everyone for their lovely
