The puppet theatre, The Nightingale, presented by the Rag and Bone Puppet Theatre at the Blyth Festival Theatre was a hit for both the children's series last week. The play is presented by two puppeteers, one musician and a combination of hand puppets. The puppets fit onto the puppet- eers hands in a way that the hand of the person operating the puppet appeared to be the puppet's hand. By doing this, the puppets are able to pick things up and make gestures. There are few props, so the audience is able to fill in all of the details with their imaginations. For this reason the play is more fitting to school-age children. When a long cloth is held up, they realize that it represents a path, for example. The story, written by Hans Christian Anderson is straight forward and simple ate _sip _s, co- t'C' BOOSTER ,Vr CLUB FREE DANCE & DRAWS for $15 00. in Prizes SAT., MAY 12, 1984 CLINTON COMMUNITY CENTRE 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. ,o oco6/19 MAIN STAY (Jim Medd) No Minors If no Booster, ticket '2.00 at the door Licensed under Special Occasion Permit Wed. No admission enough for its school -aged audience to follow. It takes place in the kingdom of a Chinese Emperor many years ago. A very proud emperor hears of a nightingale who sings beautiful songs in his forest. After hearing the nightingale sing, the emperor invites the nightingale to live in his kingdom and sing songs to him. All is well until the emperor receives an artificial diamond studded golden nightingale as a gift which sings songs even more perfectly than the real nightingale. With this, he orders the real nightingale to leave the palace. As with all toys and mechanical machines, the artificial nightingale becomes worn out in time and breaks. The emperor takes an oath that if it is fixed, he will only quietly play the music of the artificial nightingale once a year. Years later the emperor becomes ill and it is assumed he will die. Laying alone in his death bed, the emperor wishes to hear the beautiful music of the nightingale but since there is no one nearby to wind the artificial bird, the emperor can not hear the music he wants to hear. From outside the window however, he hears the tunes of the real nightingale which comforts him and makes him feel strong and alive again. The story behind the puppet play is very meaningful. It shows the audience that artificial things are nice and pretty but need to be wound up or fixed if broken. Real things require no extra work or fixing. The use of Oriental music and the sound of the nightingale adds to the atmosphere and mood of the play. There is good use of singing, dancing and simple melodies scattered throughout the play. The puppet- eers narrate as they go along so the audience will not get confused about what is happening. The puppets are cleverly dressed in Oriental costumes and painted masks. The characters of the puppets are realistic and BROWNIES DRIVE-IN 169 BEECH ST. - CLINTON ending suitable to the idea of what we picture emperors and their counsellors to be. The dialogue is very witty and humorous. The one fault with the play is the ending. it fails to come full circle with the beginning of the play. At the beginning of the play the narrator tells of the emperor's tomb in' China and a nightingale who is buried with the emperor. This indicates to the audience that the emperor and the nightingale will die by the end of the play. Since both are alive and well at the end, the result is a confusing and unsatisfying ending. The length of the play is ideal for school age children although young children tend to become restless by the end. The Nightingale is a puppet play that is easy to follow. It gives a little Oriental history, humor, entertainment and even a good meaningful message. It is a play definitely worth seeing if it ever comes into this area again. 505 OFFICE OPENS 6:00 P.M. -FIRST SHOW AT DUSK FRIDAY -SATURDAY -SUNDAY MAY 11-12-13 bl ..E.s May 18 9 p.m until 1 a.m. Admission $3.00 (Tickets at the door) Disc Jockey Segerens Quality Sound Seaforth & District Community Centres 2ND FEATURE Aair.LitYEOT DUBLIN & DISTRICT ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION moves BINGO FRI., MAY 11 Sponsored by Booster Club & Jr. Farmers Ntevens DISC JOCKEY SERVICE Country Gold & Rock 'N' Roll Good recorded music for weddings, dances, anniversaries, parties, etc. Phone Brussels evenings & afternoons 887-6159 DUBLIN & DISTRICT COMMUNITY CENTRE JACKPOT $850.00 in 57 Calls Seaforth and District Ringette invites you to their ANNUAL ORIENTAL TEA GARDEN Ft DESSERT LUNCHEON at the Seaforth & District Community Centres Fe Fashions From Seaforth Merchants Wed.
