Katimavik to plant over 400,000 trees in Ont
Ontario's forests will be richer by more
than 400,000 trees by May 31 thanks to
Katimavik, Canada's national volunteer
youth program.
The massive planting is Katimavik's
contribution to National. Forest Week, May
6-12, and an important element in the
organization's on-going "Tree Project". The
project emphasizes outreach and public
education on the value and significance of the
forest environment for Canada, along with
silviculture (tree planting).
The activities have been designed to
highlight the contribution each Canadian can
make to reforestation.
Planting has already begun in most parts of
Ontario and work should be completed by the
end of May. Katimavik, which has 800
participants working in dozens of communi-
ties across Ontario, will engage in both
large-scale and small-scale protects,
West District: An estimated 250,000 trees
will be planted by participants and staff of the
Bayfield-Ausable Region Conservation Au-
thority near Exeter; another Katimavik group

Katimavik, Canada's volunteer youth
•
sei.Vice program, provides young people
between the ages of 17 and 21 with the
opportunity to further their own personal
development while providing a volunteer
service to Canadian communities. The
program, funded by the Department of the
Secretary of State, this year will grow to more
than 5,000 participants working in 430
communities across Canada. By August of
this year, Ontario will host 133 of those pro-
jects with about 1,600 participants province -
wide.
From its beginning, Katimavik has chosen
to put its objective of increased environment-
al awareness for young people into practice
by taking part in forestry -related activities
whenever possible,
Participation in the "Tree Project" also
allows participants to meet Katimttvik's
objectives of personal development, service
to Canadian communities and understanding
of the country.
