TALENT SHOW—Students of St. James
school In Seaforth were treated to a talent
show, put on by the students, Friday
afternoon. Besides piano and violin solos
were acts that Included tap dancing, singing,
guitar and clarinet selections. Tickling the

bicentennial dinner enjoyed by over 100
Over 100 members and guests of the
Seaforth Horticultural Society spent an
enjoyable evening on Friday, May 4 at
Northside United Church at the Society's
Bicentennial dinner.
A delicious roast beef dinner was served
complete with cornmeal muffins And many of
those attending as well as those serving
wore period dress.
The tables looked attractive with green
plants and coal -oil lamps. Dessert was
Bicentennial cake, which was appropriately
decorated with trilliums in green and white
and was cut by President Ruth Beuttenmiller
and Dr. rollin.
Many enjoyed viewing the antique display
of quilts, dishes, documents, a sample of
cross writing, apple peelers, irons and tools.
Guest speaker, ,Dr. Clayton Switzer,
Deputy Minister of Agriculture, was unable
to attend. He was replaced by Dr. George
Collin, Executive Director of Education and
Research, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture
and Food.
Dr. Collin talked about horticulture, past,
present and future. He said the Horticultural
Society is the largest service club in Ontario
with over 50,000 members. The first Society
was formed near Toronto 150 years ago. It
used about five acres of land for gardens
which is now known as Allen Gardens.
BIRTHS
President Ruth Beuttenmiller told off the
Society's other projects for this Bicentennial
year, which are a flower bed at Victoria Park,
a planting at Seaforth Hospital and the
Bicentennial rose bushes which will be
available at the society's meeting on
Wednesday night.
Clarence Lange, Chesleyt Director of
O.H.A. spoke on behalf of District 8 which
stretches from Lions Head on the north to
Hensel) on the south. He stressed we should
keep Ontario blooming.
Rev. Vanslyke welcomed everyone to
Northside Church and recalled how his
ancestors settled near Niagara in the 1700s.
Other guests present were Mayor Alf
Ross, Marjorie Durnford, tsecond vice-presi-
dent of the O.H.A., Pauline Richards,
London past president O.1i;¢1., Don Pullen,.
Clinton, Agriculture representative and
members from several other horticultural
societies.
Jean Durst was presented with a service
certificate for outstanding service in horti-
I ature and the Mary Haugh Memorial
Trophy. She has contributed generously to
the society and community in' knowledge,
plants and flowers, has helped with the
junior club and has added much to the
annual flower show, Ciderfest and plant
sale, and garden tours.
TEICHERT: Karl and Sheila (nee Butt) are
happy to announce the birth of their son,
Kyle Andrew, on April 25 in Stratford
General Hospital, weighing 9 lbs. 7 ozs. A
brother for Keegan.
FLANAGAN: Peter and Joanne Flanagan are
pleased to announce the arrival of Mark
Stephen. He was born on April 27 at Seaforth
Community Hospital weighing 7 lbs. 8 ozs. A
new brother for Matthew.'
STACEY: Bill and Sally Stacey are pleased to
announce the arrival of their first child, a son
Bradley William on Apr. 5, weighing eight
pounds. A grandson for Mr. and Mrs.
Wendell Stacey, Mitchell and Mr. and Mrs,
Jack O'Rourke of R.R.1, Dublin; also a

HILDEBRAND: Doug and Lori Hildebrand
are pleased to announce the birth of Jeremy
Andrew on Apr. 23 at Seaforth Community
Hospital, weighing 7 lbs. 11 ozs. A brother

BROOME: Kevan and Cathy (nee Carter) are
thrilled to announce the birth of their first
child, a boy, Wade Carter, on May 5 at St.
Joseph's Hospital, London weighing 8 lbs.

George Carter and Jack Armstrong of

Mrs. Durst, who was taken totally 'by
surprise expressed thanks find invited all
to come and tour her garden anytime.
Everyone present received Bicentennial
pins and the winners of Bicentennial posters
were Beryl Nicholson and Dave Cornish
while Mr, Lange won the flowers.
Bicentennial dinner committee chairper-
son Nancy Kale acted as M.C. for the
evening. Other members of the committee
were President Beuttenmiller, Luanne Phair
and Steve Hildebrand.
Pitch -in participants increasing every year
More than ever before, Ontario residents
are showing their community pride and
appreciation for the environment, through
involvement in Pitch -In, being held from May
7 to 13. Ontario's participation has increased
since 1983 by 42 per cent according to the
latest figures from the Ontario Federation of
Anglers & Hunters, sponsors of the cam-
paign which is endorsed and supported by the
Ontario Ministry off the Environment.
With more than 2500 groups participating,
Pitch -In will make a major contribution to the
beauty and cleanliness of Ontario this Spring.
Outdoor and recreational organizations,
many of whom are members of the
Federation of Anglers & Hunters, have
focussed their attention on' projects to
conserve or enhance wildlife habitats and
local, regional or provincial park areas.
School groups, Scouting and Guiding
organizations and town councils throughout
the province are adding their strength to
community beautification efforts during
Pitch -In '84.
