To some, the word brings back the horrors of elementary school spelling tests...how many is are there in etiquette? For others etiquette means which knife to use, the proper side for a corsage or the correct length of dress to wear. In the world of driving, etiquette can really be translated into the rules of the road, and can certainly make life on the highway more pleasant and less dangerous. In the case of sports etiquette is equally important to ensure that every one can enjoy their game. Downhill skiing is no fun at all and dangerous too if people continually cut you off on the slopes. (Cutting in on someone lining up for the lift can be pretty dangerous too). Every sport has its etiquette guidelines for the benefit of the players and golf is no exception. The first two pages of the "Rules of Golf" book are devoted to etiquette. Since most casual or weekend golfers do not carry a rule book with them and some have never even seen one, the basic rule§ of behavior are printed on each scorecard. Golf etiquette, is essentially the "rules of the road" and these guidelines are designed to make the game Spruce up your yard with BEDDING PLANTS ISF‘Ut** 16 years & up Phone 523-9704 more enjoyable for all those involved. Anyone playing the, game should read or reread the etiquette of golf printed on their scorecards before beginning play. For beginners, it introduces them to the basics of courtesy on the course. For the veterans it reminds them of their obligations to those who also take part in the game. 1. Players who are learning the game and delaying players following should allow them to pass through if they desire to do so. In other words, don't forget to look in your rearview mirror occasionally. Even if you're not a beginner it's important not to hold up the people behind you and also keep the pace of the game moving. Golfers usually play in groups of four and these foursomes help to keep the pace of the game constant. Groups of more than four are not allowed. Single golfers must remember that although they play faster alone they cannot expect to rush through preceding groups. It is advisable for singles and pairs to join up, form a foursome and keep the pace constant. It's no fun having to rush to stay ahead of the group behind you and it's equally frustrating to have to wait before you ' can hit every shot. 2. Turf cut or displaced when playing should be replaced and pressed down at once, These pieces of turf are called divots and there is no harm caused to the fairways when a divot is taken as long as it is replaced and tapped down right away. Then the grass will continue to grow. Excessive numbers of Thank You The Brodhagen Chamber of Commerce wishes to thank the following for financial support of the ball program. Players looking for a lost ball should at once signal to those following to pass through and having given such a signal should stand aside and wait until these players are out of distance before proceeding. This rule is much abuked as golfers wander about in deep rough, bushes, and adjacent fields or along the edges of ponds and streams searching for those elusive white balls. It is only common courtesy to wave following golfers through. Once you have waved them on, step aside and let them get well out of your range before you continue. If you must search for a ball in an adjacent field, leave cart and clubs behind as crop damage is a great inconvenience. Let golfers on their own fairway have the right of way when playing a. ball that has been hit off the fairway In play. 4. Players having holed out should not try their putts over again when other players are following them. How tempting It is to try that little putt one more time to see if it really does break away from the hole. If everyone reputted. the missed ones we'd be out there until the cows come home. You can also speed up play around the greens by placing clutrs and carts beside the green in a position where they can be handily picked up on the way to the next tee. Line up your putt while the rest are putting and never stop to mark the score card on the green. Do this on the next tee. 5. Players should not play from the tee until those in front have played their second or are out of range. Common sense once again rules here. Golf balls can be very dangerous and anyone about to hit should be sure that those in front are not in danger, 'Sometimes to speed up play it is acceptable to let the golfers who don't hit as far shoot first so that by the time the long hitters are ready the group ahead is well out of range. Remember that this ruling is often up to the players' discretion and it's wise to use your head for more than a target. 6 & 7. A match playing 18 holes had the right of way over those beginning or just playing a few holes. Players who cut in forfeit all rights and must not delay or obstruct other la e s P Nothing is more frustrating than waiting for someone who "appeared" out of nowhere. If you are only playing a few holes and are not playing in the proper order then be prepared to stay well ahead of those following. 8. Proper attire must be worn. Proper attire to one soul is not always proper attire to another, but some standards must be set. Certain attire is required in many sports. After all there are many more restrictions on what you must wear for hockey or broomball than for golf. Proper shoes are a must for golfers. They need not be the spiked golf shoe for everyone, but shoes with heels and rubber cleats are strictly prohibited, for the benefit of the putting greens. While some courses are very strict about clothing most courses where castrtll play is allowed accept players dressed neatly. This year a limited dress code will be in effect at the local course. These basic rules of behavior arerinted on cards for all to see and for the benefit of the game.
