KIDS
Try turning off the boob tube
BY PATRICIA RIMMER •
Although many people like to deny it, the
television actually becomes a member of the
family in many homes. 10 some families, it is
considered a babysitter or entertainer for the
kids while mom or dad is busy running
errands or doing work in or around the
house. The television is a great way to pass
the time, but who wants to pass the time in
front of a tube? Life is short enough already.
By the time a child finishes high school, he
has spent approximately 11,000 hours in the
classroom and 15,000 hours watching
television. The average Canadian spends
more time watching television than any
other single activity except perhaps sleep-
ing. It is guessed that by the time a typical
Canadian reaches the death bed he will have
spent nearly eight years watching television.
These statistics amaze me.
People, including myself, sit at the
televison watching shows whether they
really like to watch them or not. i can sit at
the television watching an hour long
program and then get up asking myself why
I wasted my time.
Instead of reading a book, some people
prefer to watch television. It takes a lot less
time to finish a story if you watch it on
television than if, you are to read it in a book.
However, television leaves nothing to the
imagination like. a book does. So often a
person is disappointed when they watch a
movie that is adapted from a favorite book. A
person pictures characters from novels in
their own way and to see that person in a
different way changes their outlook on the
•
show and even the story. Also, when put on
television', parts of the story are eften
changed or left out.
Television has a huge effect on a family as
a whole. Since television was invented many
changes have, resulted in the family routine
of many homes. Board games and card
games are not nearly as popular as they were
years ago, or even when 1 was.a kid. Many
children come home from school just in time
to watch the Beverly Hillbillies and other
favorite television shows.
Actually the Beverly Hillbillies is one of
the better shows on the tube these days as it ,
contains far less violence than most shows
these days. Programs such as the A Team
and the Dukes of Hazards may encourage a
child to act in a violent manner or attempt
dangerous stunts. Small children do not
realize that there are stunt men on television
or that in reality the coyote on the Road
Runner Show would not, get up . and walk
away after being blown p by a cannon or
falling into a canyon. Some aspects of TV
give us a very unrealistic 'outlook at life.
Even adults fall into the trap of believing
everything that they see on television. While
watching programs such as Dynasty or
Knots Landing, one may become accustom -
'ed to the fancy clothes and nice houses in the
show and decide that unless he lives in the
class that these people live in, he will not be
successful.
Many people decide that they need what
ever appears on the screen whether it be a
new car, a new toy or even food. While
watching an advertisement for restaurants,
you cannot helpbut be taken in by the rich
thick mozzarela dripping from a pizza, or
the charboiied burger topped with fresh
fix. We seem to think we need
whatever ,'television tells us wethat need, .
Many timesyou can hear a song on an
advertisement that is easily picked up by
children and adults alike. Many times I have
heard preschoolers sing along to advertise-
ments on the television or the theme song of
a fat'orite cartoon or series. Yet, if you were
to ask that same preschooler to count to 12
he ma not be able to do it. Then again, if he
did, chances are that he would count in the
same rhythm and tune as they learn from the
popular children's show Sesame Street.
Parents seem to think that Sesame Street
is a terrific educational show and 1 have to
agree that it does•a super job of teaching
children how to count, say the alphabet and
do many other things as well. It has been
criticized though because each learning
segment of the program only lasts approxi-
mately 30 seconds, meaning that the child's
attention span only has to be short. It is
thought that this. short listening and
attention span may result in learning
difficulties later co in the child's life.
Shows such as Charlie's Angels and
Matium P.1. show to a child that many . of
life's problems may be solved in a half hour
or an hour. The child begins to think perhaps
that if he has a problem, it may be solved in
a short period of time. '
In many homes, the television has
replaced many, sources of family entertain-
ment. Visiting between family'members has
• CHOICE TENDER FULL CUT
been cut down considerably. A whole family
can sit together for an hour entranced by the
tube without saying more than five words to
each other. The only time there is any action
in the room is when a commercial Is on.
This tube that is so popular comes in
many shapes, colors and sizes. You may find
more than one, perhaps one for every person
• in the family. This little box may have a
special room named for it...the T.V. room.
1t has many enemies however. One big
enemy,is the radio or stereo which competes
violently for attention. Once it was the radio
that entertained so many as they sat around
listening to Jack Benny or Amos and Andy.
Another enemy of the televisio home-
work which seldom if ever gets .hed if
the tube is on.
Watching television becomes a _ d ve. In
m any homes the television is turned on first
-thing in the morning and left on until late at
night. Day after day people "have to watch"
the soaps. You may say that you are not
taken in by the television.. -In that case try
this test.. Go to the living room, family room
or TV room and unplug the set. Go 'for a
week without watching television and see
how easy it is.
Pew people can do this. It's really sad to
seehowmuch money and time is spent on
this set. It would be a nicer world' to live in if
more people visited than watched television.
Conversations today consist of what was on
television last night and what will happen on
,filth, game On TV toi fight. Sad isn't it?

Friendship ministries from St. Catharines
came to Hullett Central School on Wednes-
day afternoon, Apr. 25. The whole school
saw a puppet presentation at i p.m. about
character development. Grades four and up
saw another show at 1:30 in which puppets
represent human organs and warn of
dangers of drugs and smoking. Everyone
really liked it.
