Nature seems bent on waging a vindictive
rampage throughout the United States. After
severe winter storms, floods and ice storms
with excessive damage and loss of lives, later
onslaughts have brought earthquakes, tor-
nados, twisters. Only last week came more
disasters to the US midwest. More than two
dozen tornadoes were reported, followed 'by
a blinding snowstorm with steady wmas of u
to 70 km. an hour In one area. Elsewhere
severe thunderstorms brought hail with
winds gusting to 115 km an hour. One town
was devastated and in others homes and
business places were destroyed. At least 15
lives were lost. While some east coast
Canadian areas suffered, somewhat similar
problems and Manitoba on Friday had a
severe spring storm that left some rural areas
without power over the weekend, nature has
not vented her wrath on us as in the US. How
thankful we should be for that.
Nobody likes to pay income tax but we
know it has to be done. What really makes the
blood boil is the injustice of the system that
allows some Canadiaris with incomes over
5250,000 or more, to legally avoid paying any
taxes. It is done, within the law, through a
complex list of loopholes and shelters into
which those who have the cash to spare can
put much of their taxable income. It is
especially galling to learn that if all special
tax breaks were eliminated the tax rates of
Canadians could be reduced by 45 per cent.
These loopholes kept billions of dollars from
the tax man. Then where did those billions
have to come from? From those who haven't
the spare cash to stash away in tax shelters —
the ones who struggle to have a decent life
with something left for their old age comfort,
