The Huron Expositor, 1984-05-02, Page 7SPORTS THE HURON, EXPOSITOR, MAY 2, 1984 - A7 Score cards give local golf rules (Continued from page A6) way home in the car. Two simple digits and two days to explain them. Now, just imagine if a scorecard left you enough space to write a short paragraph on how you arrived at the total on each hole? The game is slow enough now and t can just picture golfers all over the course writing essays on their game. Why we'd have to put desks at every tee with supplies of pencils and erasers! 1 can see them now recording wind speed and direction, grass thickness and length, the club used and the technique. Golfers would be writing smaller and smaller inorder to explain the score in the allotted space. Across the fairway you would hear then yelling, "how do you spell scull?" I wonder if spelling and neatness would count. Handicapping and declaring a winner would be difficult especially if the story was judged on artistic impression and originality. We would have to hire a panel of judges to mark the scorecards (international of course) Alas that tiny square has just enough room for a double digit figure. Beside the spaces for•the score the golfer comes up with are other spaces with numbers already printed in them. These numbers are really a pain in the neck because everyone is trying to match these with their own. It's not as easy as it sounds, What you sees it not always what you gets) At the bottom of the card is space for the total scores. One for you and one for the course. Here also is a space marked "handicap" and here again you're supposed to fill in the blank with no more than a two digit number. If golfers had the space to explain this number the scoreboard would nmhahly he nn the hest seller list Room for the date and the signature of each player rounds out that side of the card. Signing the scorecard is not all that important in a fun game but there has been an awful lot of money change hands on the pro tour just because a scorecard was signed before properly being checked for errors. The most famous incident of this type occurred when Roberto de Vicenzo was tied for the lead in the Masters but he signed his card with the score one shot higher than the actual score. This score stood and Roberto had to watch as the green jacket was presented to another pro. If he had signed for a score lower than he actually shot he would have been disqualified outright. Local rules are also printed on the cards to assist golfers with each courses' special features. For instance at one golf course in Africa a local rule states that any ball coming to rest in a hippopotamus footprint may be lifted and placed no nearer the hole without penalty. Finally, every scorecard lists the basics of golfing etiquette. Unfortunately some golf- ers are too busy filling in the blanks to follow the rules of good manners. We'll get to that another time. The next time you pick up a scorecard, read it over and remember it's one of the ' most important parts of the game. Reread- ing it years later golfers can often recall the entire round of golf just by the numbers on the card. Thank heavens they're disposable. Now that the clocks have changed we'll begetting the mens and ladies nights going. Ladies will meet after golf on Monday May 14. Everyone is invited to join us for the 2 -ball on Saturday, May 19 at 2.
