GREENS BY CAROLANNE DOIG There's one sure way to tell how busy the golf course has been without ever looking out the window, Just check jhe scorecards piled neatly in the proshop. They have been going down rapidly and at the same time the scorecards in the handicapping box are increasing at a great rate. The scorecard is a very important Dart of 'the golfing scene. At our club 1000's of scorecards are used each summer but only a fraction of that number are ever turned in, The first thing most golfers ask for in the proshop is a scorecard and they study it with care as they head for the first tee. Although there is space for four names almost every foursome that comes in takes four cards with them. Of course no one wants to keep score and the excuses are many. "1 don't have a pencil" or "1 forgot my glasses" are the two most common, Mind you the golfer who forgot his specs is the first to spot the eight that should really be a six on the card. Unlike many other sports golf has no referees, scorers,' or scoreboards to record how the game is going except in professional or international events. If you golf alone, only you will know what score is on the card: Just imagine the embarrassment' of taking a 12 on a hole and then having a huge computerized scoreboard flash it all over the course for all to see! Most of us can be thankful to keep our scores to ourselves. The card, just a simple piece of paper, is an important piece of the golfer's equip- ment. The most expensive technically advanced clubs, a color co-ordinated outfit, and all the lessons in the world are all for nought if the final number on the scorecard is a disaster. The bottom line is literally "the bottom line" when it comes to golf. Scorecards are different for every course. They are unique and original and many avid golfers have been known to collect cards from various clubs. Some cards are miniature billboards advertising everything from local fast food places to used car lots. Other cards have quotable quotes, and trivial questions and answers about the game of golf. There are even scorecards at some courses with 20-25 pages of advertising, tips on play, and extensive information on the golf course. Maps of the courses are very popular and these maps are especially helpful when you have a bad game at a strange course. Then, if you quit halfway through you can find the bar without getting lost. Although scorecards are as different as the courses they represent, they do have a number of things in common. As well as the space for each golfer's name there are 18 small spaces for you to record the number of strokes taken on each hole. The key word here is "small". You have room for a number only. Whether it is 3, 5, 9, or 13. It doesn't matter how you arrived at the number. All golfers are familiar with the expression, "It's not how, it's how many," but there isn't a golfer alive who will let the scorecard tell the whole story. That 13 will be the topic of conversation for the next 5 , holes as well as in the clubhouse and all the (Continued on page A7) COCA COLA DIET COKE SPRITE and DIET SPRITE CASE OF 24 TINS 4.veividdlieted/eetwl HORSEBACK' POKER -10 -year-old Tracey Conservation Area last weekend.
