Farm pesticides
handle with care
If you have never had time to put on
rubber gloves or a mask when handling farm
pesticides, consider yrs:. some common
farm insecticides such ah the ones common-
ly used for corn). can be *ore toxic to
humans than the chemical strychnine.
What makes some insecticides even more
dangerous than strychnine is that they don't
have to be taken orally to be toxic. Many
insecticides can be absorbed through the
ckin
While insecticides are generally much
more'toxic than fungicides or herbicides, all
farm chemicals should be handled with
respect.
The toxicity of pesticides varies with the
type of form cation you use, the way in which
'they can enter your body and your body
weight, age and sex. To compare the relative
toxicity of pesticides, eadh one is rated
accorjding to its LD 50 (Lethal Dose 50%)
value. The actual L1:1.50 value of a pesticide
will not be important to farmers, but what is
important to note is its. relative toxicity.
The table below presents ,the relativity
toxicity of some farm pesticides and other
chemicals we are familiar with. Chemicals
'with a LD 50 value of less than 50 can be very
toxic to humans at less than one teaspoon of
product absorbed. Chemicals with a 'LD 50
value between 50-500 have a medium toxicity
at up to 1 ounce of product absdrbed.
For example, the chemical dyfonate, a
corn rootworm insecticide, is lethal -to an
adult weighing 180 pounds at one-tenth of an
ounce. Thimet is just as lethal at 0.07
ounces, while atrazme is less toxic and 11
ounces of product can be lethal. •
No one would consciously consume these
products, but accidental intake can easily
occur. Chemicals handled without gloves
and then having a cigarette or rubbing your
eyes before washing may lead to problems.
If you are storing and handling pesticides
safely and using protective equipment such
as rubber' gloves add a mask, then none of
these pesticides are dangerous. They will
dbe ,dangefous .wb .not handled
irectly. "
There are a number of simple, common
se se pprecautions in handling any chemical.
Apart frot'n safety equipment, a fresh change
of clothes each day is important. Rinsing
containers three times before disposing and
following the directions and precautions on
the label is a must.
