Brussels Women's Institute plan for Bake and Plant sale

The executive of the Brussels Majestic
Women's Institute met on Monday, Apr. 16
to prepare the programs for the coming year.
It was decided to hold a Bake and Plant
Sale on May 11 at 2 p.m.
On Wednesday, Apr. 18, four Institute
members travelled to Moncrieff where the
District President Mrs. Peggy Cudmore
installed their 1984-85 slate of officers.
On the same evening Mrs. Marie
McTaggart installed the Walton Women's
Institute slate of officers, following their
dinner at the library.
Don't forget, the Dessert Euchr4 being
held at the librit y on Monday, Apr. 30 at 7
p.m. Proceeds are going to the Cancer Fund.
SENIORS HOST RALLY
On Thursday, Apr. 12 the Senior Citizens
Club of Blyth and Brussels hosted the nineth
Spring Rall of Zone 8 of the United Senior
Citizen's ofOntariowith 108 present in the
Legion Hall.
Meeting called to order by Percy Blundell,
President of Zone 8.
Rev. Douglas Zetie of Brussels Mennonite
Church conducted the devotions. Reeve Cal
Krauter welcomed the members to Brussels.
After lunch Mr. and Mrs. Alf Sutton led in a
sing song.
Mrs. Joyce King, first vice president of
the USCO gave an interesting and informa-
tive report.
All the executive of USCO are volunteers.
The Clubs of Seniors has grown from a few,

to the present 1186 clubs and there are 44
zones in Ontario. The 1984 convention is in
Windsor in August.
Mrs. Pike and Mrs. Mitchell played some
toe tapping melodies on the piano and violin.
Jim Laurie sang one Scottish and one Irish
on

New officers for Zone 8 include; president,
Mrs. Irene Davis, Hensall; first vice, Barry
Gandier, Zurich; second vice, Gerald Exel,
Brussels; treasurer,' Mr. Deeves, Clinton;
assistant treasurer, Bert Fear, Blyth;
secretary, Mrs. Irene, Johns, Exeter; assist-
ant secretary, Mrs. Bertha McGregor,
Hensall.
HORTICULTURE ANNUAL
The annual meeting of District Eight of
the, Ontario Horticulture Association met in
Melville Presbyterian Church in Brussels on
Saturday, Apr. 14 with an attendance of 181.
Previous record for attendance at a district 8
annual was set in 1983 At Lucknow with a
total of 154 attending. The district director
Mr. Clarence Lange called the meeting to
order by the singing of 0 Canada with Mrs.
Lulu Kerr at the piano.
A welcome and greeting front the village
was extended by the Reeve Cal Krauter. The
president of the Brussels Society Mrs. Alice
McArter also welcomed the guests and
visitors.
Mrs. Norma Hesselop introduced the
guest speaker for the morning, Bruce
McCall of Brussels. He was thanked and
presented with an envelope which he said he
would turn over to his favorite charity.

Mrs. Pauline Richards of Fordwich, past
president of the OHA spoke a few words.
Mrs. Muriel Klie also -a past president of
OHA and a past director of District eight
brought greetings from OHA. A hot beef
dinner was served by the ladies of Melville
Presbyterian Church. Convening after din-
ner a memorial period was conducted by
Auburn branch members.
The 1985 annual will be held in Ripley and
the 1986 annual in Owen Sound. The next
session of the judging school will be in June.
The OHA convention is in Sudbury on June
13,, 14, 15.
Mrs. Muriel Klie gave the nominating
committee report and the election of officers.
District Director, Clarence Lange, Chesley;
assistant director, Don Hayes; secretary,
Florence Schmitt; treasurer, ivy Gross;
auditors, Marjorie Stucluffe and Jessie
Bates; nominating committee, Roy Bennett
and Maisie Bray.
Roy Crawford presented Mrs. Ritchie with
a certificate of meritorious service to the
society.
There was a panel on the propogation of
plants with Mrs. Brian Hall as moderator
and Steven Cook and Wm. Rammeloo as
panelists. They answered questions from the
floor.
As Brussels branch is celebrating their
30th anniversary this year the meeting broke
for tea, coffee and anniversary cake.
Slides entered in the photographic com-
petition were shown. There were over 100
slides entered. Mrs. Mice McCall was the
only one from Brussels to get a prize. All 22
societies in District Eight were represented.
The meeting was adjourned to the

Calvin -Brick and Knox United churches
were decorated to greet the Targe congrega-
tion of worshippers on Easter Sunday
morning.
At the 7 a.m. "Sunrise service" the Young
People's group conducted the ehtire service,
which included a dramatized version of the
events of the first Easter Day. "The Third
Day", written and produced by Rev. and
Mrs. John Roberts, was also the focus of the
regular services at both churches.
Special music added to the enjoyment of
the services. At Calvin -Brick the children
sang, "The Three Tall Trees", accompanied
by Mrs. Mary Coultes. The senior choir sang
"The Mighty Triump" and "The Day of
Resurrection' at the service at Knox United
Church, accompanied by Mrs. Elizabeth
Procter at the organ. Also joining in the
accompaniment of the hymns at Belgrave was
Mrs. Doreen Roy.
Following the Sunrise Service, about 80
people enjoyed a hearty breakfast, served 12Y
members of the UCW. a

euchre held in the WI Hall Wednesday, Apr.
18.

low lady, Mrs. Herb Clayton; high man,

low man, John King.

The sixth meeting of the Belgrave Busy
Quilting B's was held Apr. 19 in the Belgrave
WI Hall.
The members named one way that quilting
=lie used creatively. They read about the
quilting bee and then discussed various quilts
that the members and leaders had brought in.

Mrs. Earl Anderson opened the meeting
with the theme "Because He Lives We too
shall Live”. Mrs. Lawrence Taylor gave the
treasurer's report.
Mrs. Alice Scott had the study ,'on
"Women's struggle", always being re-
garded as second place.

Fair board decides
to move show barn
Final plans were made for the May 26
dance sponsored by the Brussels Agricultur-
al Society. At a meeting of the directors it
was decided to have the Mercy Brothers for
a show and dance. Tickets are to be S8 per
person.
The show barn at the present grounds will
be moved to the B.M:& G. Community
C4ntre. New steel wilt be put on the roof.
The Major Undertaking Grant is to be
applied for under the rules of the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
The Brussels Legion Pipe Band will be
paid S75 for attending the 1983 fair.
Prize money was raised on heavy horses,
light horses, sheep and goats.
