Easter means a holiday away from school for school children, the - Easter bunny; going to church and most of alilt is a chance to visit friends and relatives, What a.special holiday it is! Ever since 1 was young, Easter has meant visiting with my cousins; aunts and uncles and my grandpar- ents. Grandparents sure are special people. Children look at their grandparents in a way that, no one else can imagine. There is a special magic about these elderly friends that draws children, whether grandchildren or not, to love them. My grandpa acts as a grandpa to many children besides his own actual`grandchildren. He has always been a tease and loves to make people laugh,, especially children. My grandma is .a great lady who just. can't seem to do enough foe you. Grandparents bend over backwards to make their grandchildren happy. A grandmother is the mother of your mother or father, by definition, but if you were to ask a child what a grandmother was you would find out that she is so much more. Likewise, a grandfather is the father of your mother or father, but he also is a friend, a tease, someone who spoils you and teaches you new game To each child a grandfather is something different and special in his own way. Every child does not call their grandpar- ents by the same name. Dutch children may call their grandparents Oma and Opa, while other kids may come up with other names. Grandma, 'Grandpa, Granny, Grampy, Grandmother, Grandmom,. Granddad, Gram, Gramp...these are all names that children use to call those people that they love so much. WHAT ARE GRANDPARENTS? When at the Seaforth and District Preschool Learning Centre this week, I asked a group of children aged three to five years old what grandparents are. I asked them to tell me what they are, what they look like and whit they like to do. Here is what they said. Shannon says her grandma is someone to love. "She's kind of old," Shannon says. Shannon's grandma gives her candy and a skipping rope. Her Grandpa Bill gives her money to ride the horse in London. When I ask Shannon what he looks like, she says "He's like people." According to Shannon, a grandpa is a person who lives with Grandma Hilda and comes to her house. Timmy sees grandpa in a different way. "When he's sick he still goes out to feed the cows." Timmy says "A cow stepped on his foot one time." It seems to me that Timmy sees his grandpa as a hero of some type and Seaforth arena last week. he sounds like a pretty special grandpa to (Hundertmark photo) me: Timmy's grandmother likes to work he thinks. "She lets Dan and me stay overnight and gives me candy." Sounds like a good H u 1 Iett Central has deal to me. Bryan has a Granny, a Nana, or Grampy and n Pa. Granny has glasses on and a . a M` * skidoo at her cottage Bryan says. All the winners from HCS had physical projects. eMdKar skidoo. "He lives with Granny." Bryan says "they just moved to the cottagh:" Bryan's grampy takes Bryan and his sister for a ride on the ski-doo. His pa has o pool in his apartment. Again, another child has another idea of what grandparents do. Brent says that his grandma has different clothes and dresses. She's got flowers:" Brent says, His 10% °FF SPRING SHOES i grandma sweeps and cooks and ties up Brent's shoes for him. "And even she makes things for me and even She tells me when to go to sleep and to school and when it is time to go to the library." Beat of all Brent says his grandma buys treats. However, Brent doesn't think he is spoiled) NOT SPOILED ` Brent's grandpa sounds very smart. "He teaches us how to build and make things." Brent says that it is Grandpa who "lets ,tis have Christmases." Like grandma, Brent's grandpa knows how to telltimeand when it Is time to do certain things. "He tells us when we can make a tree house." Like many grandpas, he likes to drive, have coffee and talk according to Brent. Lindsay's grandparents are very special to her, "Grandma does chores and knits." Lindsay says. Lindsay's grandma cooks all different things. "She has Joe and Ferg and Eleanor and Joan. She's my Daddy's mom." Nana is Lindsay's mother's mom. "Nana gives us stuff." Nana sounds like a pretty handy person to have around the house since she sews clothes and slippers and' 'makes sweaters, according to Lindsay. Grandpa does things around the house. "He has glasses and dark hair," says Lindsay., April says that her grandma works hard. "She does the dishes, caps, bowls, plates and other stuff." April thinks that her grandma is pretty. April's grandpa works outside. He has lots of horses. "He's nice to me" April says. Joanne tells me all about her grandpar, ents, or at least as much as she could Custom Cover Sale remember, with a big smile on her face. Joannes grandma wears glasses. "She knits and sews stuff." Joanne says. Her grandma also makes clothes for Joanne. Her grandpa lives, with her grandma. "He teases us." Joanne says "he can take his teeth out." It is amazing what kids can, remember! When I ask Joanne what her grandpalookslike she says LOOKS LIRE A looks like a grandpa." nRANDPA ° Finally, Krissy tells me all about ., her grandparents. She likes her grandma ,most of all because she "lets me have hot chocolate.'" Krissy's grandma gives her lots of toys and presents. When 1 ask her what she looks'like she says "She's very old)" Krissy's grandma reads her books. "Grand- ma likes to•lay down in, bed and she likes to have flowers." Krissy says. Krissy's grandpa goes to work every day. According to Krissy, he loves to tickle her eop!e and he gives her suckers. "He gives me a ride in his truck." So, you can see how special grandparents are to kids. Each child had a slightly different picture of what a grandparent is, but then a ain each grandparent is undoubtedly different in a special way, One thing remains the same from child to child and that Mlle great deal of love they felt for grandparents. A grandparent is_ a very special person. Usually they have grownup children of their own (most children don't realize this) but they don't have to, Just because an older person decided not to marry or a couple decided not to have children does not mean that they cannot adopt a grandchild whom they can show their love to. Perhaps their grandchildren live far away or never come to visit. gin CAM KIR gAVINgg •Goettler's of Dublin, Fine Furniture, 345-2250, is pleased to present to you the Barrymore Custom Cover Sale.
