Easter is over and the bunny has come and
gone. That lovely ham or leg of lamb is now
just a few bits of leftovers for the next day's
lunch. The candy and treats vanished "before
one's eyes but the proof of who ate it was all
over their hands and faces.
The weekend weather was lovely except
for the raw cold wind on Sunday. No doubt a
great many putters shined up their clubs and
headed for the green, while the swingers
were out dusting off thelate. The kickers
were limbering up on the, field in anticipation
of a future soccer game.
The lawns are getting greener by the day
while this cold damp weather is keeping the
farmers at bay.
But the sun will soon shine and boy hold
onto your hats; the engines will roar and the
dust will fly, the Jand will be worked and the
seeds will be planted, But with all this rush

Physical Education program for grade 4, 5, 6
A daily physical education program and
increased fitness for students are the two
major goals of the revamped physical
education program in Grades four, five and
six in Perth County public schools.
The Perth County Board of Education
approved 15 recommendations by its physical
education advisory committee presented at
the board's Apr. 17 meeting.
Wayne Higgins, chairman of the advisory
committee and principal of Downie Central
Public School, said the new curriculum is
based on the Auke Van Hoist physical
education program. Van Hoist is a professor
at the Faculty of Education at the University
of Western Ontario, London.
The Van Hoist program promotes thinking
skills and self esteem for students in physical
education. Encouraging students'to become
"active participants rather than pay lve
observers" is the main philosophy behind the
board's new program, he said.
The 15 recommendations by the committee
made up,of teachers, trustees and members
of the public include the provision of $22,500
in the board's 1985 budget.
Trustee Earl Oppenhauser said it is too
early to direct next ye zr's finance committee.
The uoard agreed to make the. $22,500 a
recoinmendatlon to ti e 1985 finance commit-
tee.
Various types of balls, nets, mats,
baseballs -and high jump equipment are
examples of some of the equipment to be
purchased.
The committee suggested that North
Easthope Public School teacher Andy Ander-
son take a leadership role in physical
education across the county. The board
agreed to allow him three half days every six
teaching days for such duties.
The board also approved increasing the
amount of time spent for physical education
from six to nine per cent. Mr. Higgins said
nine per cent represents about 180 minutes
for every six school days.
The increase in time won't take time away
from other subjects; rather, some parts of
physical education can be included in other
subjects said Mr. Higgins. As an example,
physical education can be incorporated into a
language arts program through drama.
Mr. Higgins said there is not yet a Van
Hoist program for Grades seven and eight,
but the board should consider introducing the
program for those grade levels when the
program is completed.
A similar physical education program for
Grades one to three was introduced three
years ago.
