Egg prices nosedive -
decrease biggest in years
The price paid to egg producers will fall by
three -cents -a -dozen for Grade A large to its
lowest level in six months, the Canadian Egg
Marketing Agency (CEMA) announced.
One of two major factors resulting in the
price drop is the recent high demand for
spent fowl. Egg farmers are getting more for
their old layers so eggs will cost less.
The other factor was a drop in the
conversion rate to Grade A large since there
were more large and fewer medium-sized
eggs produced last month.
The conversion .rate is used to determine
the difference in price between Grade A
large and the average price the farmer is
paid for all egg sizes,
The three cent drop is the biggest monthly
decrease since 1976 when CEMA began
using its Cost of Production Formula to set
egg prices.
•
The agency determines the price for
Grade A large at the beginning of each
month using a mathematical formula that
reflects on-farm costs. This formula is
monitored by the National Farm Products
Marketing Council.
Pocrs ,for .ti} , other.sizes Are pet the
agency after negotiations with the pro cial
egg marketing boards. Wholesalers and
tetailers actually determine the price paid by
consumers.
