Changes to the Propane Vehicle Program took effect on Apr. 1. The most prominent chane will allow owners of private noncom- mercial vehicles. to claim the costs of eligible materials used in the propane fuel system, up to a total of $400. This Energy, Mines and Resources Canada program was introduced in June 1981, and had been restricted in the past to commercial and farm vehicles. These groups will continue to qualify for the $400 taxable grants under the new formula. The expanded program will also pay for dual propane and gasoline systems, based on the same 5400 Government of Canada contribution. In the past, payments were limited to propane -only conversions. A new restriction is that the $400 contribution will no longer apply to used equipment, labour costs, or equipment or parts being transferred from one vehicle to another. The program target is 100,000 vehicles converted by the end of 1985. To date, the gcivernment has provided financial assist- ance to convert more than 33,000 vehicles., To be eligible for the $400 payment, claimants must supply invoices that identify the vehicle(s) and purchacerfcl of the vehicles conversion, the ownership or vehicle regi- stration for each vehicle being applied for, and a provincial inspection certificate where applicable. When the vehicles are leased, the claim must be accompanied by a letter from the lessor authorizing payment to the lessee.
